There are 7 more Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works, 2 live-action and 4 animated

As a devoted fan who has traversed the tumultuous lands of Westeros for over a decade, I can’t help but feel both elated and bewildered by HBO’s relentless pursuit of “Game of Thrones” spinoffs. The anticipation is palpable, like the chill in the air before a White Walker attack.

The television series “Game of Thrones” concluded a few years back, yet HBO has been aggressively expanding its universe with spin-offs. One of these, titled “House of the Dragon“, has proven successful for them; tonight marks the season finale. Another upcoming spinoff named “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is currently being filmed and will release next year. It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas.

For some time now, it’s been understood that HBO has been developing other potential spinoffs behind the scenes, but the details often shift. Previously, they were planning a sequel series centered around Jon Snow, starring Kit Harington, but recent reports suggest this project may be on hold. They also filmed a pilot for a show titled “Blood Moon,” but ultimately chose not to move forward with it.

As a dedicated fan eagerly following George R.R. Martin’s work, I was thrilled to catch wind of his recent conversation with Philip Pullman at the Oxford Writers’ House. During this engaging talk, a fellow audience member inquired about the possibility of an animated adaptation of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, hinting at one that might be truer to the books than ‘Game of Thrones’. Martin didn’t explicitly respond to this question, instead mentioning that the decision is beyond his control but hinted that HBO, indeed, holds the animation rights to his stories. He further disclosed that HBO is currently working on seven potential spinoffs for ‘Game of Thrones’, three in live-action and four in animation. These new projects join the already announced ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.

Over time, this number has fluctuated, leading to uncertainty about whether certain shows will be produced or not. Occasionally, a show might seem cancelled, but later news suggests it’s still in production. Conversely, some shows are said to be in development, only for them to apparently be shelved. It can be difficult to predict which ones will actually air, and it’s even possible that none of them will make it onto the screen at all.

It seems there are two additional live-action series and two more animated ones that we’re not yet familiar with. However, keep in mind that these could be subject to change as they have done so in the past. Nevertheless, it remains an exciting prospect!

In the meantime, let’s look forward to watching the Season 2 finale of “House of the Dragon,” airing tonight on both HBO and Max.
