After seven seasons, the popular Amazon Prime series The Boys has come to an end. The show earned praise for its raw and realistic portrayal of superheroes, and for not shying away from dark or controversial topics – something that set it apart from more mainstream superhero franchises like Marvel and DC.
Though the final season of the show felt a little weaker and spent too much time building towards a spin-off instead of finishing the existing storylines, it remains a landmark series in the superhero genre. Now that it’s over, a new show is quickly gaining popularity on Netflix and taking its place.
Get ready for The WONDERfools, a new eight-episode K-drama packed with superheroes! Starring Park Eun-bin (from Extraordinary Attorney Woo) and Cha Eun-woo (True Beauty), the show delivers a fresh take on the supernatural genre. It features ordinary, flawed characters who suddenly gain incredibly strange powers. This hilarious and action-filled series shows how Korean dramas are breaking away from typical romantic comedies.
Amazon’s Superhero Satire Finally Has A Worthy Successor On Netflix As The WONDERfools
Set against the backdrop of the 1999 Y2K scare, The Wonderfools tells the story of Eun Chae-ni (played by Park Eun-bin), a troubled young woman with a serious heart condition. Hoping to fulfill her dream of traveling abroad, she concocts a risky plan to stage a kidnapping and demand ransom money. Unfortunately, the plan fails when she unexpectedly dies from a heart attack.
When Chae-ni unexpectedly dies, her friends—the kind but large Kang Ro-bin and the financially struggling Son Gyeong-hun—attempt to hide her body near a trash dump. This leads to a strange accident involving chemicals from a secret lab, bringing Chae-ni back to life and giving all three of them wildly unpredictable superpowers linked to their feelings. Lee Un-jeong, a clumsy government worker who can secretly move things with his mind, witnesses the whole thing.
As a total cinema devotee, I have to say what really makes this K-drama so good is how real and messy the connection between the actors feels. It’s genuinely funny watching these flawed characters discover what they’re capable of – the humor feels natural, never contrived. And honestly, whenever Son Gyeong-hun and Kang Ro-bi share a scene, I just burst out laughing. They’re a fantastic pair!
Every good superhero story needs a strong villain, and this series delivers with Ha Won-do and the Wunderkinder. This group of superpowered individuals were created in a lab and trained from a young age to be dangerous, making them a truly frightening challenge for our unprepared heroes.
The Netflix K-Drama Perfectly Mirrors The Boys’ Darkest Elements
Unlike The Boys, which took several seasons to develop its characters, The WONDERfools immediately gives us compelling and emotional backstories. Right from the start, the show skillfully reveals Lee Un-jeong’s difficult past, explaining both how he gained his telekinetic abilities and his traumatic childhood involvement with the Wunderkinder project.
As a flagship Netflix series, the show boasts impressive production quality. The special effects are polished and not at all low-budget. The scene where Un-jeong first demonstrates his telekinetic abilities by destroying a building immediately establishes the show’s powerful and serious tone.
What truly makes this K-drama a great alternative to the popular Amazon series is its explanation of where the characters’ powers come from. Similar to the way the show uses Compound V, the superpowers aren’t something people are born with. Instead, they’re the disturbing outcome of a secret scientist experimenting on children.
Although it’s not as intensely violent as The Boys, the K-drama makes good use of its mature rating with plenty of action and bloodshed. If you’re a fan of the chaotic superhero action and violence in The Boys, you’ll likely enjoy Netflix’s The WONDERfools.
