Even though The Wheel of Time was canceled after three seasons, doesn’t mean the streaming service is abandoning fantasy shows. They are currently working on a television adaptation of Fourth Wing, and the show is expected to star both established actors and new talent.
Michael B. Jordan, through his production company Outlier Society, is working on a show based on Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series. He recently told the BBC that they won’t be casting famous actors in the main roles; instead, they’re looking for fresh faces.
I really believe we can find the perfect cast – a mix of fresh faces and established stars that won’t pull focus from the story. We’re hoping for that sweet spot! Everyone’s been asking if I’ll be acting in it too, and honestly, I’m still figuring things out. I just don’t know yet!
Casting Will Be Crucial for Amazon’s Fourth Wing Series
Whether a movie or TV series based on a beloved book does well often depends on the actors chosen for the main characters. The Harry Potter films, for example, were a big hit partly because they found the ideal actors to play Harry, Ron, Hermione, and all the other characters from the Wizarding World.
Jordan told the BBC that finding the right actors would be key to a successful TV adaptation of Fourth Wing. He believes strong casting will let viewers connect with the characters as they envisioned them, without preconceived notions based on familiar faces or past roles.
He explained that whatever he decides won’t be predictable or cliché, but something genuine and heartfelt.
Amazon MGM Studios first announced plans to adapt Fourth Wing into a TV series in October 2023. Moira Walley-Beckett was initially set to lead the project as showrunner in July 2024, but she left the adaptation in June 2025, just three months later.
I’m completely hooked on the Empyrean series! It’s about Violet Sorrengail, a twenty-year-old who thought she’d spend her life as a Scribe, but her mother – who’s a general – basically forces her to try out to become a dragon rider. It’s intense because she has to survive Basgiath War College, where they train riders with a ‘Graduate or Die’ philosophy. Seriously, the stakes are incredibly high, and it makes for a gripping read!
As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve been following Rebecca Yarros’ series, and right now it’s three books in: Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, which both came out in 2023, and Onyx Storm is coming in 2025. The good news is, she’s planning two more books to wrap up the whole story! Plus, she’s going to be an executive producer on the Prime Video show they’re making, working with Jordan and Liz Pelletier, which is awesome.
Prime Video has gained a reputation for successful adaptations of popular books and stories, including shows like The Wheel of Time, Bosch, Cross, and Reacher. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next season of Reacher, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.
