This show heavily features a significant villain each season. According to showrunner Ben Watkins, the team really enjoyed developing Luz, the serial killer who will be central to the plot of Season 2.
Jeanine Mason stars as Luz, a vigilante who targets wealthy and powerful individuals she believes exploit others. The story begins with Luz seeking revenge on a group of rich men on an island with young women, a premise clearly inspired by recent, highly publicized events. However, the character of Luz offers viewers a fresh and complex perspective to consider.
We wanted to create a character—Rebecca, who becomes Luz, played by Jeanine Mason—who would be both entertaining and thought-provoking. Luz is a vigilante, and we initially present her as tough and uncompromising, but someone you still want to support. Our aim was to draw the audience in, making them understand her motivations and even agree with her targets deserving some form of justice. However, we also wanted to push boundaries and make viewers question how far she should go and whether they’re still on her side. If we can achieve that—entertaining the audience while also making them uncomfortable and questioning their own support—that’s a success. Early feedback from test audiences suggests we’ve hit that mark, which is really exciting.
Luz Is A Great Villain For Cross Season 2
Luz is a compelling character who elevates this season of Cross. Viewers are invested in her actions because she feels strongly that she’s doing what’s right – seeking justice for her mother and other women who have been harmed, even if it means taking the law into her own hands.
Mason explained that unlike Ramsey from season one, this character’s anger doesn’t stem from a desire to kill. Instead, it’s driven by personal experience and a desire to avenge her mother. Mason emphasized that there’s a deep sadness and clear motivation behind her actions, revealing a fundamentally decent person affected by the system.
Both Watkins and Mason perfectly captured what makes Luz such a compelling character. She’s more complex than villains we’ve seen before, and the show takes a different path than the original James Patterson novels. Luz feels particularly relevant to current events, and it remains to be seen if viewers will be as unsettled by her actions as critics have been.
Cross Season 2 is now streaming on Prime Video.
