The Walking Dead: Dead City Won’t Bring Back Glenn
A spinoff series focusing on Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has always been controversial because of their difficult history. This makes sense considering Negan killed Glenn (Steven Yeun) in the Season 7 premiere episode, ‘The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be’.
Despite some fans hoping for a romance, Maggie and Negan haven’t become a couple. However, after years of growth and change, Negan has earned a degree of redemption. In Season 3, they’ve reached a peaceful understanding, and a special episode will explore what their relationship could have been like if Glenn hadn’t been in the picture.
That episode focusing on Beth’s return explores an alternate reality – a timeline where the apocalypse never happened. It imagines a world where Beth lived, Maggie didn’t meet Glenn, and Negan didn’t kill him. The story then asks what those characters’ lives would be like in that different scenario.
Scott Gimple, a long-time producer on The Walking Dead and an executive producer for Dead City, shared his initial reaction to the show’s alternate universe episode. He admitted he didn’t immediately grasp the idea, but ultimately had faith in the writers and their approach. “I trust in the writing. It was just the core concept that I initially found a little confusing.”
Sometimes I push myself towards challenges that are unnecessarily difficult. When something feels like it might come easily, I almost reject it, thinking it needs to be harder – maybe because I worry about others enjoying it too much.
Perhaps we should see how things develop, but it feels like the show needs to do more than just rely on its basic idea – and this episode delivered. My main concern was that it would fall back on something simple or predictable, like just showing characters using telephones.
This story is deeply moving and feels very true to life. Its strong connection to reality makes its entertainment value well-deserved.
I initially doubted it, but the way things turned out completely changed my mind – I was proven spectacularly wrong! Despite my initial skepticism, I have faith in the people making the show.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan Teased a Different Life for Maggie and Negan
I really enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun to perform, especially because we’ve been playing these characters for a while. This project allowed us to explore something completely new, but it still felt connected to the familiar story of Negan and Maggie in this post-apocalyptic setting.
The story reimagines two familiar characters meeting in everyday life, specifically as if their paths crossed on a random street corner in New York City. It explores how they might interact and what would happen next – essentially giving us a glimpse into a completely new chapter of their relationship.
I never expected that idea, not in a million years! I remember when Seth first suggested it, and even then I thought, ‘Hmm, I’m not sure if that’s going to work – it feels like a long shot.’ But I think it will be really rewarding for everyone, especially the fans. We’re all going to love how it turns out.
