As someone who knows a thing or two about daytime TV, I was really surprised to hear Kathie Lee Gifford express her concerns about the current direction of ‘The View.’ She feels the show has become unnecessarily harsh and, frankly, a bit mean-spirited, and she recently shared that observation in an interview. It’s a reminder that even in lively debate, kindness matters!
During an appearance on the Tomi Lahren Is Fearless podcast on Monday, the 72-year-old television personality stated that the morning talk show has become much more controversial compared to its earlier years under previous hosts.
Conservative commentator Lahren started a conversation with Gifford by asking if she believed society was currently more divided than it used to be.
Gifford observed that there are simply more people now, and they’re generally less considerate. He noted a decline in politeness, saying people used to at least pretend to have good manners, but now there’s a real nastiness.
The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for The View for comment.
The show, which first started in 1997, is now hosted by Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro.
Joy Behar has been a part of the show since it began, with a brief departure for two seasons starting in 2013.
Whoopi Goldberg has been a co-host on the show for almost twenty years, having joined in 2007.
Haines and Hostin became part of the show in 2016, and Griffin and Navarro joined in 2022.
During a conversation with Lahren, Gifford remembered previously appearing on The View as a guest and saying she’d enjoyed her time.
I used to appear on The View and have friendly conversations with hosts like Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as others like Debbie Matenopoulos, who I’m still friends with. We never had disagreements because I wasn’t trying to force my beliefs on anyone.
I believe in sharing what I believe, but I definitely don’t try to scare people or tell them they’re wrong. That’s just not my style, you know? I prefer to live my faith, not preach doom and gloom.
‘I want people to have a little bit more heaven in their life than hell,’ she added.
Lahren then asked Gifford if she still felt comfortable on The View, but the former Today Show host expressed sadness over what she described as the show’s increasing negativity and harshness.
Gifford observed that many people seem unhappy these days. He acknowledged that even discussing this topic might upset some, but insisted he himself is not one of those unhappy people.
Then she claimed to have ‘joy personified.’
Meghan McCain, a former co-host of The View from 2017 to 2021, has been one of the show’s most prominent critics.
Known for challenging the more liberal views of her coworkers, the conservative commentator and daughter of the late Senator John McCain was a frequent voice of opposition.
In a 2021 interview with the Daily Mail, Meghan shared that she’s accepted the fact that she evokes strong reactions in people – some love her, while others strongly dislike her. She’s reached a point where she’s comfortable with this duality.
During a 2022 podcast interview with Commentary Magazine, Meghan McCain revealed she left The View because of a hurtful comment Joy Behar made about her taking time off after having a baby.
Following Joy Behar’s scolding of John McCain for cutting her off, McCain playfully responded, ‘You really missed me, Joy! Especially when I was on maternity leave. You missed our debates!’
Behar coldly replied, ‘I did not. I did not miss you. Zero.’
McCain told Commentary that after the comment exemplified her treatment on The View.
She explained that she felt a lack of support both when her baby was born and when she returned to work, and that’s ultimately why she decided to leave her job.
