The Umbrella Academy season 4 is the wild, uncanny, and chaotic ending we were hoping for

As a long-time fan of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that this fourth season was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! With its intricate plotlines, emotional depth, and character development, it’s safe to say that the writers truly outdid themselves.

While settling in to start the last season of The Umbrella Academy, I couldn’t help but ponder where, when, and how the story had concluded in the season 3 finale. If you share my sentiment, watching a quick recap before diving into the new episodes was absolutely essential, as it served not only to refresh our memories but also to build anticipation for what promised to be a thrilling conclusion to this unique series that explored multiple apocalypses, eccentric characters, and a family bond unlike any other.

As I settled down to catch the last season, I was jogged by the memory that the Hargreeves family had left off at an intriguing point in season 3. In essence, old man Hargreeves (Colm Feore), or a form of him, aimed to eradicate the entire Hargreeves brood (and indeed succeeded in taking one life). This was after he broke his promise with Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) by seemingly turning against his family. However, it was Allison’s subsequent move that sent shockwaves through the family.

Pressing a button transported the Hargreeves family to the year 2019, stripped of their powers, including Luther (Tom Hopper), who appeared deceased. As they grapple with this realization, the family splits up, bracing for an imminent, life-altering event. The only thing visible as they depart is Reginald and his wife Abigail (previously believed to be deceased or on her deathbed in season 1) observing from a building’s lofty vantage point.

Initially, many queries went unanswered as the fourth season kicked off. Six years later, things become more engaging, and the plot becomes intriguing. As a fan of The Umbrella Academy, I found the disorderly climax of its final season captivating because it stayed consistent with the series’ established character. The farewell was tinged with a combination of sadness and happiness that manages to leave you with a cheerful grin on your face.

As we approached the last chapter, there was much riding on the outcome, given the family had lost their powers and were uncertain about their future, shrouded in mystery. In a manner truly characteristic of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, events unfolded, and while this season may not have been my top pick among the four, I believe it executed its narrative effectively – managing to carve a place for itself in our collective hearts.

We will miss you, The Umbrella Academy, and the many, many timelines you gave us.

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of this beloved series, I am eager to share my thoughts on the final season, episode by episode. Please be mindful that the following analysis is filled with SPOILERS, for those yet to experience the climactic end of this journey.

Season 4, Episode 1: “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want”

Among the highlights of this season that I particularly enjoy is undeniably the addition of Nick Offerman as Dr. Gene Thibedeau, Megan Mullally as Dr. Jean Thibedeau, and David Cross as Sy Grossman. Their participation in this concluding season adds a unique blend of dark humor and emotional depth to some scenes. From the very beginning, their presence is refreshing and I have no doubt that fans will be thrilled by their role in the storyline this season.

In the opening of season 4, each member of the Hargreeves family copes uniquely with their circumstances. A captivating aspect of this episode for me was the concept of a secret group called the Keepers who oppose the existing timeline. They believe that something has been altered, and they’re on a crusade to purge all other timelines except for the authentic one. I should add that Gene and Jean head the Keepers, which seems quite fitting.

In the meantime, the Hargreeves family reunites. A stranger assigns them a task to rescue one of their own. Unbeknownst to them, this rescue operation will set off a chain of events, culminating in the reactivation of their superpowers…

Season 4, Episode 2: “Jean and Gene”

In this episode, it’s clear that Ben (Justin H. Min) isn’t hitting it off well with his Hargreeves siblings at first. However, without their knowledge, he slipped marigold into their drinks, a move designed to restore their powers. The next morning, they find out that their abilities have been reactivated, and they must now face the challenges that come with having these powers again.

Siblings can just be so pesky can’t they?!

In this episode, though not the strongest of the series, it certainly lays the groundwork for what’s to come in the season. It was great to witness the Hargreeves siblings reuniting as a team once more, working together to unravel a mystery, even if it wasn’t their preferred situation. The show’s charm has always been rooted in their peculiar and distinctive connection, so I found myself drawn back into that dynamic as they embarked on their mission to find Jennifer (played by Victoria Sawal). Eventually, Gene and Jean manage to seize her, making quite an entrance by colliding with a van – a clear message that they mean business!

As someone who has always been captivated by complex sibling dynamics and intricate family relationships, I find this series particularly gripping. The episode that unfolds between Ben and Jennifer seems to hint at a bond that goes beyond typical sibling ties. While I won’t delve into specifics to avoid spoiling the suspense for others, let me just say that even in an average episode, it managed to build tension in a chilling manner. The way the writers subtly explore their characters and interweave their stories is truly masterful, making this series a must-watch for anyone intrigued by human relationships.

Season 4, Episode 3: “The Squid and the Girl”

In this review, we avoid revealing specific spoilers about Jennifer, but let me clarify that the third episode provides valuable insights into her role and connections within The Umbrella Academy. This episode delves into Jennifer’s backstory, offering a clearer picture of her character and importance. It sheds light on aspects such as the Keepers, the impending Cleanse, and the reasons behind Gene and Jean’s obsession with Jennifer. As a result, we discover that the Hargreeves family finds themselves at the heart of a situation where the Keepers might be onto something significant. Regardless of their feelings, they understand that there is a pressing need to revisit the timeline, and they find themselves right in the middle of it all.

Could I pause for a moment to express that the chemistry between Victoria Sawal as Jennifer and Justin H. Min as Ben is simply extraordinary? Whenever they shared a scene, it was captivating, enchanting, and always left you craving for more.

As a seasoned detective with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that when it comes to unraveling enigmas and solving mysteries, there is no one quite like ‘old Daddy Hargreeves. With his vast knowledge and keen insight, he has always been able to shed light on the most confounding cases. So, as the intriguing tale of Jennifer and her mysterious link to Ben unfolds, I find myself eagerly anticipating his input. After all, when it comes to cracking codes and uncovering secrets, Daddy Hargreeves is the master sleuth we all need on our side.

Season 4, Episode 4: “The Cleanse”

As Ben’s story unfolds for the Hargreeves offspring and they discover his fate in another reality, they grow curious about what Daddy Hargreeves might know. What they uncover doesn’t make him a contender for Father of the Year, but given that this is an alternate Reginald, perhaps he isn’t the same man they remembered.

In this episode, I delve deeper into the fateful night when Ben passed away and potential connections between him and Jennifer. While I won’t give any major spoilers, the insights uncovered truly lie at the core of this captivating final season.

The intrigue deepens at this halfway mark as not only are we uncovering the secret behind Ben and Jennifer, but it also leads the Hargreeves siblings on separate investigative journeys. What they didn’t foresee was the possibility that two of their group members might be trapped in time forever…

Season 4, Episode 5: “Six Years, Five Months, and Two Days”

In the second-to-last episode of the series, you’ll find yourself gripped from beginning to end. Out of the six episodes, this one stands out as my top pick. The narrative is filled with palpable tension, the stakes seem to escalate towards a critical point with no turning back, and there’s an undeniable sense that the story is nearing its conclusion, even though we’re left guessing about the specifics. I believe this episode offers a rich experience, complete with unexpected romantic elements.

In my enthusiastic journey as a fan, I follow along as Viktor (Elliot Page) and Reginald reach Ben and Jennifer’s final known hideout, only to encounter a band of Keepers intent on thwarting them. On another front, Luther and Diego (David Castañeda) delve into the CIA for whatever clues they can find, but they too face their own setbacks. Simultaneously, Allison pursues Klaus (Robert Sheehan), who, upon regaining his powers, slips back into his old habits. Meanwhile, the dynamic duo of Five (Adrian Gallagher) and Lila (Nitu Arya) sneakily infiltrate the Keepers to uncover their objectives and the Cleanse, but they find themselves in a precarious predicament…

It’s apparent now that the season has reached a critical juncture, as absolutely everything – without exception – seems uncertain. This leaves us pondering…what on earth will be the outcome when the last episode rolls around?

Season 4, Episode 6: “End of the Beginning”

The concluding scene of this series has an unexpected emotional impact on me. In a sense that I hadn’t anticipated, it mirrors the usual ending style of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, yet it still caught me off guard.

The climactic episode of the series finds Jennifer, Ben, and the Keepers at a critical juncture. Their long-term adventure now reaches its conclusion, leaving the Hargreeves siblings in a precarious state once more. They must unite to face a monumental choice that could transform their world entirely.

I found the conclusion of this series incredibly satisfying, in a way that’s uniquely reminiscent of “The Umbrella Academy.” It’s a finale that will leave you giggling, teary-eyed, and feeling all sorts of emotions because it brings an end to the captivating journey. The quality of writing throughout the season, especially in the final episode, is exceptional and delivers a conclusion we never expected yet deeply desired, even if we weren’t consciously aware of it.

The emotional rollercoaster of this show, particularly its last season, culminates in a disordered finish, leaving viewers with an oddly warm and hazy sensation in their hearts – a feeling uniquely crafted by the Hargreeves clan.

You may be over, The Umbrella Academy, but we will never forget your weird, strange, and heartfelt story.

Season Grade: B+
