The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 2 recap: “Jean and Gene”
As a dedicated fan who’s been following The Umbrella Academy since its inception, I must say this season is shaping up to be quite the rollercoaster ride! The second episode was a whirlwind of twists and turns that left me reeling, much like the characters themselves after those marigold shots.
In the second episode of season 4 for ‘The Umbrella Academy’, we find the Hargreeves siblings waking up the day following their dinner, grappling with some intense after-effects from the marigold concoction they consumed.

Luther wakes up with a terrible hangover and his boss thinks he’s under the influence of drugs at work. He displays unexpected strength, dancing with audience members and lifting them effortlessly. Unaware that his powers are returning, Luther is merely enjoying this newfound ability. Meanwhile, Diego delivers mail packages and enjoys demonstrating his strength by throwing letters directly into mailboxes without leaving the truck. Five, an employee at the CIA, experiences a strange occurrence (teleportation) and decides to take a day off, puzzled about what happened.
The Hargreeves’ powers have returned!
At the nightclub, Luther removes his clothes and frightens the crowd, only to discover he’s transformed back into his simian form, enraged that his abilities have returned. The entire family gathers at home, demanding explanations. Even Lilia possesses powers now, manifesting as laser beams from her eyes, although she’s unsure of how to control them. Ben arrives and confesses he was responsible for the marigold in their drinks. He’s developed tentacles, a revelation that shocks his siblings. Everybody appears unwell except for Klaus, who eventually reveals he didn’t consume the drink. The family is infuriated with Ben for altering their lives so drastically.
After searching for Sly at the dry cleaner’s, the siblings can’t find him. Instead, they stumble upon a map highlighting New Grumpson, Maine. With no other choices, they embark on a journey to this town in hopes of finding Sly. During their trip, they start feeling unwell and end up throwing up dramatically. Later into their road trip, Diego shares his suspicions about Lila having an affair with Five. Feeling reluctant to disclose The Keepers, Five counsels Diego to dismiss these thoughts instead. Meanwhile, it’s revealed that Lila has been secretly eavesdropping on the conversation.
The Hargreeves group eventually reaches New Grumpson, unsure of their destination, so they decide to separate. Ben quickly departs on his own, navigating to a local diner. However, his behavior towards the diner owner and the town sheriff earns him a reprimand, causing him to vacate. Meanwhile, Viktor and Allison share a moment where Viktor acknowledges Allison’s actions and expresses his contentment. Although they are no longer friends, Viktor accepts their situation.
Klaus spends time in his van, shuffling tarot cards, eventually drawing the card of death, which unsettles him. He resists the urge to grab the glove compartment’s bottle of marigold. Meanwhile, the diner owner spots Ben outside and asks him back inside for a chat. They exchange some words, and she shares stories about her life in New Grumpson. Ben appears to grow fond of her.
An attack in New Grumpson
In the heart of our little town, I express gratitude to Five for keeping my secret from Diego. Just then, Five spots a fellow resident eyeing us suspiciously. Meanwhile, across the town, I, along with Viktor and Luther, catch the gaze of numerous townsfolk, making it seem like every eye is upon us. A woman working at an antique store pulls out a gun and attempts to fire at us, inciting the entire town to join in this shooting spree. Amidst this chaos, my siblings are under attack. In a desperate bid for safety, Five dashes towards the train station, hops onto the next arriving train, only to find himself back at New Grumpson’s same stop, yet in an alternate reality. He quickly jumps back on the train, determined to locate his siblings once more.
In a turn of events, Diego and Lila use their abilities to eliminate several townsfolk, while simultaneously a woman rushes towards the van, pleading with Klaus for aid. She questions if she’s Jennifer, to which she replies affirmatively, alleging that others are attempting to take her life. The siblings quickly approach, recognizing her deception, and it is disclosed that this Jennifer is actually the diner woman. The imposter Jennifer then fires at Klaus, striking him in the chest, and Diego ultimately ends her life.
As Luther, I’m out and about with Viktor and Allison when I spot some clothing bearing the “Hargreeves Enterprises” logo, understanding my father is involved in all this chaos. Suddenly, a mob rushes towards us, forcing me to step up as a shield for my siblings. In the heat of the moment, Viktor and Allison unleash their powers, dealing with the threatening townsfolk. Meanwhile, Five appears out of nowhere from the train station. Just when things look grim, a man in a Santa suit starts firing at us, but luckily Diego shows up just in time, slamming him with the van as he screeches past, running over the gun-wielding Santa.
Who is Jennifer, really?
The siblings are all together in the van, along with the real Jennifer, and they drive out of town while Klaus bleeds out. They take out the bottle of marigold and Allison apologizes before pouring some of it into Klaus’ wound. Klaus does not want his powers back, but that’s the only option they have to save his life. Diego assures Jennifer that they’re going to get her home to her dad, but she’s confused. She doesn’t know who he’s talking about. Suddenly, another car hits them and in slow motion, we see Jennifer’s hand light up with some type of power and touch Ben’s.
It’s clear that Gene and Jean are the individuals responsible for the incident where someone was struck, and following the accident, they took Jennifer along with them. In his attempt to contact Jennifer, Ben finds himself unsuccessful as the situation draws to a close.
