This summer, Will Ferrell is launching a new comedy series on Netflix called The Hawk. It follows Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a former golf star whose prime was twenty years ago, and who’s now struggling with the physical realities of aging. Ferrell created and stars in the show, and it’s assembled a talented team and cast to deliver a hilarious series that goes beyond just golf.
Will Ferrell has a proven track record of success with sports comedies, making his new project worth considering. Talladega Nights is still considered a classic from the 2000s because it cleverly poked fun at NASCAR, American ideas of masculinity, and the obsession with winning, all while still showing genuine appreciation for the sport and its culture. Blades of Glory achieved a similar balance with figure skating. Ferrell excels at playing characters who are completely self-deluded, but whose unwavering commitment to their beliefs makes them endearing rather than just silly. His new character, Lonnie Hawkins – a golfer convinced he’s on the verge of a major comeback despite all evidence to the contrary – seems perfectly suited to this established formula.
The most interesting thing about this show is its format. Unlike a two-hour movie, a television series allows for more in-depth storytelling, and the team behind Will Ferrell seems to be taking full advantage of that. The production company T-Street, known for the Knives Out movies, is involved, as is director David Gordon Green, who’s worked on everything from Pineapple Express to the recent Halloween films. Plus, a partnership with the PGA Tour gives the show real credibility and access – which should make the golf scenes feel authentic and believable.
The show relies heavily on its talented cast. Molly Shannon plays Stacy, the ex-wife of the main character, Lonnie. Jimmy Tatro stars as Lance, Lonnie’s successful son and a rising golf star, creating a funny and ongoing rivalry between them. Luke Wilson and Chris Parnell play the antagonists – Wilson as Golden Fisk and Parnell as a PGA Tour official – and they expertly play off Will Ferrell’s chaotic energy. Rounding out the cast, Fortune Feimster as Lonnie’s new caddie, Sam, and Aida Osman as Crystal add vibrancy, proving the show isn’t solely focused on Ferrell’s character.
Golf is a particularly interesting choice of setting. In 2026, it’s unique – unlike sports like NASCAR or figure skating, golf blends traditional sports with a modern lifestyle appeal in a new way. With the PGA Tour gaining more attention and the sport attracting a wider audience, the timing is perfect for a high-quality comedy like The Hawk. Will Ferrell’s character, Lonnie Hawkins, pursuing a Grand Slam isn’t just a funny idea; it’s a way to explore a world that many people are becoming increasingly interested in.
