The popular manga and anime series Dandadan is a surprisingly successful and unique title. It’s an exciting blend of action, supernatural elements, romance, and everyday life, and it boldly breaks the typical rules of its genres.
Like many action-packed manga series, Dandadan is full of strong characters who have unique and interesting powers. The story takes place in a world where ghosts and aliens are constantly clashing, and it really explores the fun possibilities of its strange supernatural abilities. As the story unfolds, Dandadan introduces a wide range of powerful characters, each with a captivating and unusual skillset.
Rin Sawaki appears in chapter 58 of the manga Dandadan and plays a key role in Tatsu’s story about the supernatural. She, along with Aira and Momo, all have feelings for Okarun, creating a lighthearted and competitive dynamic between them. This connection strengthens further when Rin’s hidden spiritual powers are unlocked after she comes into contact with Okarun’s unique energy. As a result, Rin must face the ghost of her friend from childhood, Mai Kawabanga.
The latest arc of Dandadan concludes with Rin developing the ability to control gravity through her singing, a power she gained by merging with Mai’s spirit. When she combines this ability with her classmate, Koki Yukishiro, she undergoes a flashy transformation resembling a punk-style pop idol in Chapter 222. While gravity manipulation is incredibly powerful, Rin’s physical weakness limits her effectiveness in fights. After the Black Paldins steal her power, she’s once again vulnerable, but her friends are sure to help her regain it soon.
Koki Yukishiro’s fighting style, named after William Golding’s classic novel ‘Lord of the Flies’, is a formidable one. We first see her ability in the Kozuka Knives Arc of the manga, where she ambushes Momo Ayase at school, intending to steal her psychic powers. The resulting fight, with Koki taking on three opponents at once, demonstrates that she’s incredibly powerful and a real danger, even to strong characters in Dandadan like Momo.
The incredibly powerful Lord of the Flies, who can control vast numbers of tiny creatures like flies and pygmies, requires the combined strength of Okarun, Aira, and Momo to defeat. Kiko, initially introduced as a minor enemy in chapter 168 of the Dandadan manga before becoming a friend to Momo and others, won’t appear in the anime adaptation for some time. However, when she does, her massive swarms promise to be even more frightening animated than they are in the manga.
Even though Momo doesn’t believe in psychic abilities and thinks her grandmother is faking, Seiko Ayase truly is powerful. Known throughout the world of the paranormal as a skilled medium, Granny Seiko has a deep understanding of yokai and remains unflappable, even when facing scary opponents. She demonstrates this right away in Dandadan by defeating Turbo Granny with a baseball bat, protecting her granddaughter from a possessed Okarun.
Unlike some characters who have specific powers, Seiko draws on the strength of local gods to fight evil spirits and perform exorcisms. She generally operates within Kamikoshi City, which limits how much she can help the heroes when they’re on missions far away. However, within her range, she’s incredibly powerful – most weaker spirits and even superpowered teens don’t stand much of a chance against her in the world of Dandadan.
Aira Shiratoshi from Dandadan always aims for perfection. Even before discovering her spiritual powers, she carefully controlled how she acted around others to gain influence. Once she developed those powers, she started seeing herself as someone special, destined to fight evil. Aira is very confident, and no one is more frustrated by it than Momo, especially since Aira actually has the skills to justify her attitude.
I’ve been watching Aira in Dandadan, and she’s become a real force to be reckoned with. It all started when Momo saved her life, which somehow gave her incredible powers linked to her hair. Now, she can use her hair to either restrain opponents or move at amazing speeds. Ever since she joined the main group, Aira’s consistently been one of the strongest characters, and it looks like she’s just getting even more powerful.
Mantisian, a popular alien character from Dandadan, is a mantis shrimp who comes to Earth to help his sick son. He first appeared in chapter 20 of the manga and quickly became a fan favorite in the anime’s first season. Initially an enemy fighting alongside the Serpo, Mantisian eventually becomes close friends with the main characters. His signature move, the Jet Punch, is incredibly powerful – very few characters can withstand a direct hit and keep fighting.
As his name suggests, Mantisian becomes more powerful while battling in water, giving him a significant edge. It takes the combined strength of Okarun, Aira, and Momo to finally defeat him after he transforms into the Serpo Dover Demon Nessie, hinting at even greater potential for power-ups down the line. Mantisian truly proved his strength during the Kur invasion, where he really stood out as a powerful character.
Introduced in chapter 201 of Dandadan, The Red Baron is arguably the manga’s second most ruthless villain, surpassed only by Count Saint-Germain. He quickly earns a place among the most hated characters after severely injuring Granny Seiko, landing her in the hospital. Defeating him requires a surprising and powerful combination of Jiji and the Evil Eye, but even then, the victory isn’t a lasting one.
Jiji developed a new hacking skill that allowed him to rapidly switch places with the Evil Eye, making him incredibly difficult for The Red Baron to target. The Red Baron, connected to the Black Paladins, uses spirit abilities powered by Count Saint-Germain’s Kozuka Knives. While The Red Baron is known for turning into smoke to avoid attacks, this form also makes him vulnerable to being scattered like dust. Ultimately, The Red Baron returns to pursue Kiko and Rin, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his objective.
He began as a spirit born from the intense hatred of a young boy who was deeply mistreated. The Kito Family, a cruel and repeating enemy in Dandadan, unintentionally created this powerful being by torturing and sacrificing a child to the Tsuchinoko, a creature they worshipped with regular human offerings. After the boy’s spirit returned as a yokai to the place where he died, it grew stronger and more filled with rage, while the Kito Family continued their horrific sacrifices.
When the characters in Dandadan finally face the Evil Eye, it’s already incredibly strong and has hurt many people. This dangerous yokai can force people to commit suicide, and it became even more powerful after possessing Jiji, one of the series’ most capable fighters. Without Jiji’s self-control training and Okarun’s deal with the Evil Eye – making Okarun its sole battle partner – this yokai would be a truly frightening threat, continuing to harm innocent people.
Umbrella Boy, like many of the creatures in Dandadan, was once a human. He was the kind and cheerful brother of Unji Zuma, but tragically died and became a powerful yokai, passing on his abilities to Unji. When Unji transforms, he gains increased strength and speed, and can use Umbrella Boy’s power to launch two strong umbrella-based attacks.
The Umbrella Boy yokai becomes much stronger when combined with the Fairy-Tale Card. He can use his parasol shockwave as many times as needed, and gains the ability to fight while flying. However, Unji’s biggest weakness is that after using both of his umbrellas, he needs time to recharge his energy before he can attack again, leaving him open to attack.
Vamola, originally named Bamora, was born on a planet constantly attacked by the Kur aliens. Growing up amidst a strong resistance movement, she learned to fight and speak at the same time. Despite the harsh environment, she remained kind, and her fighting skills helped her survive. When the war reached its peak and her people made their last stand, Vamola was left with only a technologically advanced suit with incredible powers, first appearing in Dandadan Chapter 63.
Vamola has a powerful, Godzilla-like suit that lets her grow to enormous sizes, become invisible, and even create a void-like space. As fans of the anime Dandadan Season 2 know, battling Vamola is incredibly challenging, even if they haven’t learned her name yet. While she now enjoys a calmer life on Earth with her friends, she’s always prepared to fight when necessary.
I remember witnessing the arrival of the Kur, a truly terrifying alien race. They were the ones who destroyed Vamola’s home planet, and they quickly became known as one of the biggest threats we’d ever faced. Their leader, Hatsur, made a huge impact when they invaded Earth, specifically hunting for Vamola. Hatsur had this unbelievable power – they could actually warp and control space itself! But even with such a devastating ability, Momo Ayase discovered a vulnerability and was brave enough to try and use it against them.
The Kur Leader proved to be a skilled captain, leading his invasion squad to flawlessly carry out a dangerous battle plan. But Hatsur made a fatal error by attempting to kill Vamola while Momo was watching. Momo responded with a perfectly aimed Moe-Moe Tri-Beam, destroying Hatsur’s Exosuit and bringing his reign of terror to an end in the story of Dandadan.
