Following the confirmation of The Simpsons Movie 2 last September – a sequel fans had waited 18 years for – the show’s creator has now discussed another long-awaited project.
Released in 2003 for PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, and PC, The Simpsons: Hit & Run was a commercial success and remains the highest-rated Simpsons video game, considering how many have been made.
After years of fans asking for it, rumors have surfaced about a possible remaster or remake of The Simpsons game. Matt Selman, an executive producer and writer on The Simpsons—and a co-writer of the game itself—recently discussed these possibilities in an interview with People magazine.

Things aren’t definite, but if I had to sum up the possibility of another Hit & Run, I’d say ‘never say never.’ There’s clearly a lot of love for the show, and people are definitely interested in seeing more, which is encouraging.
“If we know people want it, never say never.”

Okay, so things are getting interesting! I’ve been hearing whispers about a possible Hit & Run remaster or remake, and it looks like there might be something to it. The studio behind the original, Radical Entertainment, just relaunched their website as ‘New Radical’, and they specifically mentioned Hit & Run on there. It’s definitely got me hyped!
Looking back on the game’s lasting popularity, Selman was surprised by how well Hit & Run resonated with players, and he recounted a story about the challenges of getting it developed.
I find Hit & Run really captivating,” he explained. “I worked on writing it back when I was in my mid-to-late twenties, and that was a long time ago!”

I never expected it to become so popular, a real fan favorite. Considering how many Simpsons games there have been, it’s amazing that this one…
It was a long time ago, but I recall a meeting with the game’s creators right after Grand Theft Auto III was released. We thought, ‘We need to make this like The Simpsons version of that game – players should be able to freely enter and exit cars.’ But they really didn’t want to let players do that.
Honestly, getting everyone in and out of the cars was a real struggle! But we managed it, and it was totally worth it because, let’s be real, it’s just a blast getting into those cars!

The game Hit & Run was originally published by Vivendi Universal, which Microsoft now owns. Meanwhile, Disney owns the overall Simpsons brand. However, the situation is actually quite complex, as designer Selman told IGN in 2021, describing it as a “complicated corporate octopus” to figure out.
The classic James Bond game GoldenEye 007 overcame complicated licensing problems to be re-released in 2023. This success raises the question: could the same happen for Hit & Run?
