The Shocking Truth Behind Tyler’s Sacrifice in Steven Soderbergh’s Presence
In a more casual tone, I’d say: “While Presence might not fall under the conventional horror movie category, it still manages to give me quite the spooky vibe.
Under the direction of Steven Soderbergh, known for films like Ocean’s Eleven and Contagion, and written by David Koepp, famed for Jurassic Park and Panic Room, the spooky house thriller, titled Presence, is filmed entirely from the perspective of a spirit confined within a suburban dwelling (Soderbergh using a handheld camera). The movie opens with this spectral entity watching as a family of four – married couple Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan), along with their two teenage children, Tyler (Eddy Maday) and Chloe (Callina Liang) – inspect and later move into the house.
At first, the entity seems visible only to Chloe, suggesting a possible link to her late best friend Nadia, who tragically passed away due to an overdose a few months back. As this spirit persists in its spectral watch, we see how Chloe’s sorrow for Nadia and her assertions about the ghost are dismissed as nonsense by her brother and met with coldness from her mother, who favors star athlete Tyler excessively. On the other hand, her understanding father is the first to acknowledge and sympathize with her claims regarding the presence.
Later on, Chris invites Lisa (Natalie Woolams-Torres), who is Julia Fox’s sister and a real estate agent with supposed psychic abilities, to examine the unexplained occurrences. Looking straight into the camera, Lisa expresses her conviction that the spirit is perplexed about its presence there. Subtly foreshadowing future events, she also clarifies that time operates differently in the spiritual realm, suggesting that the ghost’s presence in the house might be connected to events from the past or the future.
As I’m caught up in all this turmoil, I find myself covertly spending time and developing feelings for Tyler’s friend Ryan (West Mulholland). He seems like a sympathetic jock, always there to lend an understanding ear when I need it most. However, things take a sinister turn when I discover that he once drugged my drink while I was in the shower, apparently with malicious intentions towards me. Fortunately, something unseen intervenes, causing the glass to shatter before anything untoward could happen. Unbeknownst to me, Ryan has been deceiving me all along. He convinces me to help him orchestrate a plan to ensure we have some private time while his parents are away for the weekend. This involves getting Tyler drunk and slipping him a substance to make him sleep. I unwittingly agree, oblivious to the danger lurking beneath Ryan’s friendly façade.
What is the twist in Presence?
On the fated evening, as per his instructions, I stayed put, biding my time until Tyler succumbed to slumber on the couch below. Ascending to Chloe’s sanctuary upstairs, I found myself hoping for a different outcome, but she politely declined any company and opted for a quiet night alone. In an attempt to change her mind, I suggested we share a single drink – one that I had carefully laced with a potent substance. Alas, even she succumbed to the effects of my offering and fell unconscious. It was then the chilling events began to unfold.
Following a covering of plastic wrap on her mouth and nose, Ryan admitted his role in the tragic deaths of Nadia and another schoolmate, who appeared to have succumbed to an overdose. He revealed that he had murdered these two girls in a similar manner. Yet, he failed to explain the panicked entity hurrying downstairs and making every effort to awaken Tyler.
Upon regaining consciousness, it appears that Tyler swiftly comprehends his sister is in peril and hastens upstairs to her chamber. He bursts through Ryan’s second-story window, causing both of them to plummet, ultimately sacrificing themselves for Chloe. In the film’s concluding scene, we observe a heartbroken Rebekah, Chris, and Chloe as they prepare to depart from their home forever. However, when Rebekah glances one last time into the living room mirror, Tyler’s image stares back at her, causing her to shriek in despair.
It appears that Tyler’s final revelation implies he was the presence throughout, stuck in a loop of sorts, where he had to die to save his sister but also needed to be already deceased for the events leading to her rescue to occur. To fully appreciate the emotional impact, it might be best not to delve too deeply into the technical aspects of this paradox.
