The TV series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has explored different forms of Sauron, but the upcoming third season is expected to focus on his true, iconic self. While the show offers a fresh look at Middle-earth, a major draw is Sauron himself. In Peter Jackson’s films, Sauron was largely a mysterious, looming threat. The Rings of Power attempts to show us more of him, but it’s become apparent that he isn’t simply one defined character.
In the world of The Lord of the Rings, Sauron began as a Maia – a powerful, spirit-like being originally meant to help the Valar, who were like demigods. Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, the Blue Wizards, and even the Balrogs were also Maiar. This means beings like Sauron aren’t limited to one form; they can change their appearance and look however they choose – or are commanded to.
As a longtime fan, I’ve always found Sauron’s trickery fascinating – the way he constantly changed his appearance to get people to do what he wanted. But it looks like season 3 of Rings of Power is finally going to show us the real Sauron, without all the disguises, which I’m really excited about!
The Rings Of Power Season 3 Will Allow Sauron To Stop Putting On A Facade
J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories about Middle-earth established that Sauron often disguised himself while secretly gaining power. While we only know of one of these forms, called Anatar, the TV series Rings of Power has explored this idea further. In the first season, we met Halbrand, a seemingly heroic human who was actually Sauron in disguise, used to influence Galadriel and the people of Númenor. The second season then introduced Anatar—a skilled and attractive elven smith created to win over Celebrimbor.
As season 3 of The Rings of Power begins, Sauron has revealed himself as a powerful enemy. He’s killed Celebrimbor, wiped out the elven city of Eregion, and now commands a large Orc army previously led by Adar. He’s no longer operating in the shadows, but is openly establishing himself as the Dark Lord of Mordor. This season will finally give viewers a clear look at Sauron, and may even show him forging the One Ring and building his fortress, Barad-dûr. However, the series might still revisit his earlier disguises at some point.
We’ll Likely See Another Sauron Disguise If The Rings Of Power Season 4 Happens
According to the established lore, Sauron will assume at least one more form before the story of Rings of Power concludes. The show has introduced the coming destruction of Númenor, which will likely happen in either season 3 or, more probably, season 4. Sauron is central to this downfall, returning to Númenor and subtly influencing King Ar-Pharazôn. He eventually persuades the king to lead an attack on Valinor, the Undying Lands.
Tolkien doesn’t clearly state what form Sauron used to influence Pharazôn. It’s improbable it was as Anatar, as the people of Númenor already distrusted the Elves. The new series, Rings of Power, might show Sauron returning to the island as Halbrand, or perhaps adopting an entirely new identity. Either way, this will likely be the final time the villain appears in a deceptively appealing guise.
Sauron didn’t expect the supreme god, Eru Ilúvatar, to destroy Númenor. He was on the island in physical form when the massive wave hit, effectively killing him once more. The sheer force of Númenor’s destruction, guided by Eru, permanently stripped Sauron of his ability to hide his evil. He could no longer disguise himself as someone benevolent, like Anatar or Halbrand. From now on, as shown in Rings of Power, Sauron will appear as a purely villainous creature.
