The real reason Michelle Williams is not in Venom 3

As a seasoned gamer of comic book movies, I must say that the latest Venom installment, “Venom: The Last Dance,” has certainly kept me on the edge of my seat! The action-packed storyline and the return of familiar faces like Stephen Graham’s Detective Mulligan and Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen are undeniably enticing.

Sony Pictures has once again teamed up Eddie Brock and Venom for another thrilling adventure, titled Venom: The Last Dance. In this instalment, the duo embarks on a mission to evade their pursuers. Among those hot on their heels are the FBI, who are still chasing them due to the incidents from 2021’s film Venom: Let There Be Carnage. However, the most formidable adversaries they face are a group of terrifying creatures originating from Venom’s native planet, intent on capturing the symbiote. At the forefront of this new menace is the malevolent Marvel Comics antagonist, Knull.

In a nod to the Venom series’ signature elements, the Sony Marvel film promises an entertaining experience for its loyal audience. Additionally, it welcomes back two familiar faces from the franchise (excluding Tom Hardy), with Stephen Graham reprising his role as Detective Patrick Mulligan and Peggy Lu making her return as Mrs. Chen.

Yet, a crucial element of the Venom series is missing from the third movie, and that’s Michelle Williams, who portrayed Anne Weying in the initial two installments.

Venom 3 director wanted to take Eddie and Venom away from everyone they loved

Director Kelly Marcel from the movie “Venom: The Last Dance” explained to The Hollywood Reporter why Michelle Williams didn’t reprise her role as Anne Weying. According to Marcel, the third film was more about a journey, so many of the characters from the franchise didn’t fit into this storyline.

We really wanted to isolate them… We wanted to take them away from their comfort zone. We wanted to take them away from everything they knew and everyone they loved, so that they really only had each other to rely on now.

In the film, what makes it interesting is that Eddie and Venom, who typically struggle due to their tumultuous partnership, frequently separate when they can’t see eye-to-eye. It’s only through the guidance of their trusted allies, such as Anne, that they find common ground again. Placing them in a situation where they must collaborate, coexist, and demonstrate their status as the Lethal Protector they claim to be pushes them beyond their comfort zone.

According to Marcel, their goal was for the duo to develop a harmonious relationship, and this road trip served as the spark to help them accomplish that. Anne was one of the few who could guide them towards reason, but her absence from the narrative meant they would ultimately have to figure things out on their own without any assistance.

The real reason Michelle Williams is not in Venom 3

In the beginning of the 2018 film Venom, Anne was engaged to Eddie Brock. However, their relationship fell apart when Eddie breached her trust by publishing a significant story. Now, Anne is content with Dr. Dan Lewis as her partner. Despite this, the emergence of Venom and the symbiote world eventually led to a rekindling of Anne’s friendship with Eddie.

In our previous encounter, Anne and Dan assisted Eddie and Venom in overpowering Carnage. They advised him to depart prior to the police arrival, an action that sparked the sequence of events leading to the third movie. Notably, they are continuing their evasion from the law enforcement as the plot unfolds (following a brief foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if you will).

Marcel points out that their choice to remain united potentially endangers the world, noting that this aspect was a crucial focus for this specific narrative because it involved them.

…the very act of them being together means that the world is at risk. So they come to understand that the thing that they have chosen is actually their downfall, and so all of the characters from the previous movies — other than Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen — didn’t belong in this road trip story.”

The Venom franchise has made an intriguing shift, as suggested by the first movie. Initially, it seemed like Eddie and Anne may not reunite romantically, but there was a hint that they might in the sequel. Both Venom and a character portrayed by the late Stan Lee subtly encouraged Eddie to keep hoping for their reunion.

After the movie was released, things took a different turn. While Anne won the hearts of many viewers as a character, it seemed that the main romantic focus of the film was on Eddie and Venom. Initially, they didn’t seem to get along, but they developed a deeper bond based on trust and affection. This unexpected pairing captured fans’ imagination more than the initial film’s central relationship, leading them to express their support for Eddie and Venom as a couple by “shipping” them.

In Marcel’s opinion, one factor contributing to Anne’s reduced role in 2021’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” was so that she and her beloved character Dan could still be featured. Moreover, this decision enabled the relationship between Venom and Eddie to take the main focus, a dynamic that indeed transpired in the movie.

It’s truly disappointing that Michelle Williams wasn’t featured for a cameo in “Venom: The Last Dance,” considering Anne’s significant role in the franchise at its start. However, since the movie primarily followed Venom and Eddie’s last adventure together (and it wasn’t based in San Francisco), it’s understandable why the character didn’t appear in this particular film.
