The Mummy 4 Directors Reveal if Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Is Still Canon

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directors of the upcoming Mummy 4 (also known as Radio Silence), have clarified the status of The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor within the movie universe – whether it’s still considered official story material.

The 1999 action-adventure film The Mummy starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, and was directed by Stephen Sommers. Its popularity led to a 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, again featuring Fraser and Weisz, and a spin-off prequel, The Scorpion King, released in 2002.

A third ‘Mummy’ film, ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,’ came out in 2008. Brendan Fraser returned to play his role, but Rachel Weisz was replaced by Maria Bello. This movie is generally considered the weakest in the series, currently holding a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 174 reviews. It also earned the least amount of money at the box office of all the main ‘Mummy’ films, although it did perform better than ‘The Scorpion King’.

Universal Pictures is making a fourth Mummy movie, and Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to return. Details about the story are still being kept secret.

What did The Mummy 4 directors say about Tomb of the Dragon Emperor?

Entertainment Weekly asked directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett whether the events of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor would still be considered official backstory in their new movie, acknowledging that many fans weren’t thrilled with that particular installment.

“Well, Rachel [Weisz] is in this one,” Bettinelli-Olpin said.

Gillett added, “That should answer the question for you.”

It appears the movie Tomb of the Dragon Emperor won’t be considered part of the official storyline, so we likely won’t see any connections to its events – like the Yetis who play football – in the upcoming Mummy film. This raises a bigger question: will Rick and Evelyn O’Connell’s son, Alex, appear in the new movie? He was previously played by Luke Ford in Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but if that film is no longer considered canon, then the last time we saw Alex was when Freddie Boath played him as a child in The Mummy Returns.

The Mummy 4 will be released on May 19, 2028.
