The Mandalorian: 6 years since the first look at this new era for Star Wars

As a gamer who has lived through the rollercoaster of Star Wars fandom for the better part of four decades, I must say that the announcement of The Mandalorian going into production six years ago was nothing short of electrifying. Being a child of the original trilogy, I can still recall the anticipation and excitement leading up to each new release, much like the feeling I get when starting a new game with an intriguing storyline or engaging characters.

In the annals of Star Wars lore, this past week marked the commencement of filming for “The Mandalorian”, the franchise’s inaugural live-action television show. Excited followers were treated to a sneak peek of our main character in the form of an official picture.

It’s fascinating to reflect on that initial tweet marking the beginning of the show’s production, a risky move given the then-current state of the fandom and doubts about creating a successful live-action Star Wars series. The character depicted in the image was unfamiliar to fans, and the story took place during an era in Star Wars history that hadn’t been deeply delved into under the new canon yet.

Intrigued by the show’s promise of a solo bounty hunter narrative, viewers pondered what would make it stand out among its predecessors. Bounty hunters have been a staple in the franchise, with series like “The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels,” and the entire Skywalker saga featuring these intriguing characters, each boasting unique personalities. Reminiscent of Boba Fett and Jango Fett, “The Mandalorian” initially sparked familiarity among fans. However, it was astonishing to see how the show would develop a distinct storyline, ensuring that Din Djarin would differ significantly from his predecessors like Jango and Boba Fett. Additionally, the initial glimpse of the series in promotional materials for Season 1 provided no indication of the adorable green creature that would captivate fans later on.

Remarkably, five years ago, production for Mando began, and recently, The Mandalorian and Grogu, Star Wars’ first theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker (2019), has been in production. From the debut of Disney+ to being the first Star Wars film to start production without any setbacks, The Mandalorian has always had fortune and an air of enigma working in its favor. It was uncertain whether this series would be successful, but its achievement opened the door for everything that followed. Similarly, it’s unknown if this show will have the same impact on the big screen, but over the past 5 years, The Mandalorian has grown into a recognized brand, so betting against it might not be the wisest move.

At the moment, everyone can feast their eyes on the initial scene from the series and engage in a friendly discussion about whether Din Djarin’s original brown armor was more appealing than his polished, knight-like Beskar. Let’s hope Jon Favreau isn’t too swamped with movie production that he overlooks the fact that filming for the show commenced this week. On November 12, when Mando marks its fifth anniversary, it would be great if Star Wars could share an update on the progress of filming and treat us to a much-anticipated glimpse of Pedro Pascal in the Mandalorian suit.

The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+.
