‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Officially Adds Patrick Wilson & Jason Ritter

Patrick Wilson, known for his roles in horror franchises like The Conjuring and Insidious, is joining the cast of HBO’s The Last of Us for its third season. The popular actor, often called a “scream king,” will play a significant role in the post-apocalyptic drama, which is currently filming in Vancouver and is expected to premiere in 2027. He’s familiar with facing terrifying threats on screen and will continue to do so in Season 3, battling both mythical and real enemies.

Wilson will be playing Dr. Jerry Anderson, the father of Abby, a character introduced last season and played by Kaitlyn Dever. For those familiar with The Last of Us game and show, this is a significant role. Dr. Anderson was killed by Joel (Pedro Pascal) while trying to create a vaccine using Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who is immune to the zombie-causing Cordyceps infection. We saw Joel kill him in the Season 1 finale, although a different actor played the doctor then. This act fuels Abby’s quest for revenge, leading her to find and kill Joel in the second episode of Season 2 – a dramatic moment that some viewers found shocking, but which closely follows the storyline of the original video game.

The upcoming third season will be shown through Abby’s eyes, and we can expect to see flashbacks of Wilson as a loving father and skilled doctor. Jason Ritter will also be joining the show as Henley, a soldier in the WLF militia. Currently, Ritter, 46, is appearing in the new Matlock revival on CBS, alongside Kathy Bates.
