‘The Last of Us’ Season 2, Episode 5 Scene Was Pure Horror
Warning: Contains spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 5
The gripping tale of The Last of Us continues to intensify as we approach the final episodes. While the initial season was more focused on character development, the second season has turned into a high-octane action ride. This transformation is quite unexpected, given the slow burn start, but it seems fitting for Ellie’s narrative of vengeance following Joel’s death. Her journey has led her to engage in activities that were previously off-limits on the show.
It’s clear that “Through the Valley” is difficult to surpass due to its masterful blend of an epic action sequence and deeply moving emotional turmoil, creating a unique combination that feels nothing short of extraordinary. However, a scene in Season 2, Episode 5, gives it a run for its money by presenting what might be the series’ most chilling infected attack to date. What makes this even more impressive is that it was tailor-made for the show.
‘The Last of Us’ Uses the Stalker To Terrifying Effect
In the opening of its second season, The Last of Us unveiled a chilling new type of infected character known as Stalkers. True to their name, these creatures exhibit greater intelligence and speed compared to other infected, taking the time to strategize their attacks and catch their prey off guard. As demonstrated earlier with Ellie’s encounter, they prove difficult to eliminate, as she was bitten during their initial interaction.
In the latest edition, Ellie and Dina initiate their actions against the WLF, with a focus on Nora, who is employed at the local hospital. Meanwhile, they find themselves in an old warehouse, only to discover a pursuer already within its walls. As they strategize to capture and eliminate this stalker, more of them emerge. To compound their troubles, any gunfire might attract nearby WLF soldiers.
As their choices dwindle, Ellie strategically employs her immunity and instructs Dina to seek refuge within a cordoned-off zone for safety. In this way, they can each take out the stalkers individually. However, even this precarious plan doesn’t run smoothly. A formidable infected nearly claims Ellie’s life, while several stalkers surround Dina’s sanctuary and begin to breach the enclosure.
In a seemingly dire situation for both of them, a mysterious character emerges and slaughters the infected around them. It turns out that this savior is Jesse, who had gone against initial plans by accompanying Tommy to Seattle, providing additional security. Yet, more stalkers arrive, prompting the trio to swiftly depart from the area, aware that heavy gunfire could lure WLF members. In the end, they hide in a grotesque Seraphite ceremony.
‘The Last of Us’ Keeps Delivering Fantastic Original Material
Earlier noted, this sequence was crafted exclusively for the series. In the game “The Last of Us Part II”, the path leading to finding Nora involves an interaction with multiple stalkers. Yet, it unfolds more like a conventional battle scene where the player can’t advance unless they eliminate all the infected. It’s worth mentioning that this level occurs post Ellie’s reunion with Jesse, so he doesn’t need to save her during this encounter.
The significant shift in the representation of the encounter in the show is largely attributed to Dina’s active participation, which is quite different from her role in the game where she remained at the hideout due to her pregnancy and was rarely involved in Seattle-related actions. In the series, however, her relationship with Ellie has been expanded upon significantly, making Dina a voluntary participant despite Ellie’s subsequent regret about her involvement.
Consequently, the interaction with Dina carries greater emotional weight, as it’s clear that for Ellie, Dina serves as a beacon of hope, and the idea of raising a child together feels more rewarding than her previous pursuit of revenge. Involving Dina in the struggle not only gives Ellie more to protect, but also heightens the risk since they can both be bitten by infected individuals, with only one of them being able to survive. This makes the sequence less about combating hordes of undead and more about exploring a central theme of the series: how deeply we’re willing to go to safeguard those we cherish.
Before delving into the technical finesse of the scene’s set piece, it gradually escalates tension to an intense climax, releasing turmoil in astonishingly swift bursts. The editing is fast-paced, at times making it challenging to follow the action, but here, the speed adds to the intense sensation experienced by the characters. This is another proof of the series’ continuous improvement in action sequences, and its adaptations of the original story could be seen as strengthening the narrative.
