In the world of The Hunger Games, hope is something you’re not supposed to acknowledge. However, for over ten years, fans have secretly wished for a deeper exploration of Haymitch Abernathy, a key character, and the backstory he truly deserves.
It seems likely this new movie will be a hit. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes place 24 years before the first film, showing us the day of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games—also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Fans who loved Suzanne Collins’ books have been eagerly anticipating this story, and the recent trailer suggests it will live up to their expectations.
The Haymitch We Got vs. The Haymitch We Deserved
The new book, Sunrise on the Reaping, seems to portray Haymitch quite differently from the original Hunger Games films. While the books show Haymitch evolving from a troubled, alcoholic man into a dedicated mentor for Katniss and Peeta, the movies mostly presented his struggles as background detail. The films touched on his drinking, but didn’t fully explore it, often using it for comedic effect without showing how it impacted his mentoring. In contrast, the books depict a much more severe problem – so bad that Haymitch famously falls off stage during the Reaping, becoming a source of ridicule throughout Panem.
The character of Haymitch is much more complex in the books. He’s deeply scarred by loss and burdened by the things he had to do to survive, despite winning the Games. Woody Harrelson gave a strong performance as Haymitch in the films, and even wanted to portray him as more troubled and addicted. However, the director, Gary Ross, scaled back those ideas for the first movie, leading to a Haymitch who was interesting, but didn’t fully explore the character’s depth.
In Sunrise on the Reaping, we meet a 16-year-old Haymitch on the day of the reaping, and the preview quickly establishes that this is a very different character than the one we’re familiar with. Joseph Zada portrays him as sharp and rebellious, a stark contrast to Woody Harrelson’s portrayal. Haymitch declares, “I’m sick of living in fear. Just surviving. We’re not animals to be killed for their entertainment.” Knowing his future, it’s heartbreaking to watch.
The Quarter Quell Changes Everything In ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping reveals the traumatic event that shattered Haymitch Abernathy. The story focuses on the Second Quarter Quell, a particularly brutal Hunger Games where each district had to send twice as many tributes – 48 children in total – to fight to the death. This book shows what happened before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy, and details a direct threat made by President Snow to Haymitch: if Haymitch didn’t comply, Snow would ensure the most agonizing and prolonged death imaginable for the people of District 12.
Haymitch’s difficult journey began shortly after his victory in the Hunger Games. He was thrilled to be reunited with his girlfriend, Lenore Dove, but their happiness was tragically short-lived. President Snow, punishing Haymitch for his defiance during the Games, poisoned Lenore with gumdrops. This devastating loss broke Haymitch, transforming him from a hopeful rebel into a man who spent the next 23 years struggling with alcoholism in District 12.
Interestingly, three different actors have portrayed Snow throughout the series. Tom Blyth, in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, had a lot of freedom to define the character. Because the film is set 64 years before the original movies, he could create a Snow who was more fiery and troubled. However, Ralph Fiennes is playing a version of Snow that’s much closer to Donald Sutherland’s iconic performance. It’s a challenging role, but Fiennes is one of the few actors who could likely pull it off flawlessly.
The Hunger Games movies have earned over $3.4 billion worldwide, and a new film, Sunrise on the Reaping, is coming soon. Its success really depends on whether it can effectively show the turning point in Haymitch Abernathy’s life. We’ll see if it pulls it off on November 20, 2026.
