The Hardest Part Of Elden Ring Nightreign Isn’t The Bosses

The newly launched game, Elden Ring Nightreign, has been met with a somewhat divided response from both fans and critics. While some players are thrilled about the multiplayer aspect, teaming up with friends to conquer tough bosses, navigate the world of Limveld, and gear up for evening’s challenges, others have voiced concerns over the game’s perceived imbalance in solo content, class distribution, and the absence of a two-player mode.

A significant issue for the multiplayer-centric game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is the absence of crossplay, thereby restricting the variety of gamers who can join in. Despite boasting over 300,000 players on Steam and selling more than two million copies within a short span, the current challenging solo mode often leaves many players with no choice but to team up with random individuals or at least one unknown player if they have one friend to accompany them. In my opinion, the most daunting aspect of Elden Ring Nightreign currently isn’t its bosses.

Finding Good Players In Matchmaking Is Hard In Nightreign

The Game Has A Learning Curve, Too

Just as with any new game, particularly one developed by FromSoftware, there’s an inherent learning process for players to adapt to the gameplay mechanics, systems, and overall feel. While Nightreign may share the foundation with Elden Ring, its internal workings differ significantly. Unlike Elden Ring, Nightreign’s character classes are remarkably distinct, deviating from the standard starting armor and abilities seen in previous FromSoftware titles. Each of the eight classes offers a unique playing experience with a high potential for mastery.

In essence, Nightreign seems distinct from Elden Ring in several aspects. For instance, you can sprint whenever you want and utilize jump points for high leaps without Torrent. Moreover, each class comes equipped with a unique passive ability, an active skill, and an ultimate art, making them all feel individually distinct. Unfortunately, there’s little room to master or familiarize oneself with these abilities before jumping into online matches with friends or strangers, which only serves to heighten the game’s current level of difficulty compared to Elden Ring.

In this game, there are eight classes to master, and unfortunately, it doesn’t offer voice chat or crossplay for seamless coordination with friends or strategic discussions during boss fights. Consequently, the most challenging aspect is locating competent players to team up with. Despite its novelty, the game insists on three-player multiplayer online, making it tough to tackle without a challenging solo mode (which will be updated next week). At present, you can only rely on luck to find skilled teammates if you don’t have two friends to play with.

A Learning Curve Is Expected, But It Makes Launch Rough

The Game Was Always Going To Be Challenging

In most multiplayer games, it can be challenging to find competent players during launch. However, player ability (or inability) is significantly magnified in Souls-like games, such as Nightreign, where teamwork is crucial. Each class in this game possesses unique strengths and weaknesses, making it necessary for players to recall all the skills each class can access and swiftly develop a strategy for each interaction. Since boss battles make up a significant portion of the game, players must also adapt to these encounters, mastering their attack patterns and learning how to counter them effectively.

As a dedicated gamer, diving into Nightreign feels like standing before a colossal army of adversaries. This game boasts an impressive roster of 94 bosses, with the eight Night Lords serving as the ultimate challenge in each playthrough. For someone like me, who’s been through the Souls series, it can be a bit daunting to see so many formidable foes. Even though I might recognize a few familiar faces, the game mechanics are intricately balanced for three-player cooperative play. So, even for hardcore Souls fans like myself, the learning curve is steep and challenging.

Playing Elden Ring: Reign of Night also offers a lot of room for strategic choices, which can sometimes cause debates among groups of players regarding loot collection, relic decisions, and team makeup. Following the Soulslike formula, the game doesn’t provide many explicit instructions, instead leaving it up to players to discover how best to play. As some players are still learning the ropes, veterans might become impatient with their partners’ rate of learning.

Elden Ring Nightreign Matchmaking Will Hopefully Improve Over Time

Time Played And Other Statistics Should Be Taken Into Account

Initially in the game Nightreign, newcomers are required to pick the Tricephalos Expedition initially; the other Night Lords will only become accessible after defeating this expedition for the first time. This initial choice acts as a kind of training ground for beginners, but it also affects the variety of players they can be paired with. More experienced players might find this expedition straightforward, while novices may end up playing against similar inexperienced opponents, which could make teamwork and overcoming challenges more difficult.

Additionally, what might aggravate players is that the Tricephalos Night Lord seems to be intended for a team of three combatants. Interestingly, this beast transforms into three separate entities during battle, forcing each player to engage in individual duels against different parts of the boss. Given the vast amount of strategies to master and the time-pressured nature of the game, there are currently some gaps in the matchmaking system. It’s hoped that future updates will consider more factors when pairing players together, beyond just choosing which Night Lord to target.

Beyond this, Character Recollections serve as a factor in matching players. They generate unique tasks across the game’s map for each class and provide lore tidbits. If one is active, you cannot connect with other players who also have an active objective. This limitation can be surmounted by employing your console or PC’s invite system, but if you don’t have a complete team, the potential pool of opponents shrinks even further. Elden Ring Nightreign is a fantastic adventure when everything operates smoothly, so let’s hope the matchmaking system gets refined as players become more proficient with the game.
