Even in a galaxy filled with spaceships and laser battles, lightsabers are what truly make Star Wars special. George Lucas cleverly reimagined samurai sword fights with these iconic, glowing blades, which not only look amazing but also create fight scenes that are more detailed and exciting than anything else in science fiction.
The weapons and fights in this series are legendary, and the sound of a weapon being drawn is one of the most famous in cinema. It instantly signals to viewers that an exciting action sequence is about to begin.

9. A New Hope — Darth Vader Vs. Obi-Wan
The lightsaber duel in the original Star Wars film was a groundbreaking scene. When it first appeared in 1977, it quickly became a favorite moment for viewers and set the stage for all the lightsaber battles that followed.

Although the large-scale Jedi fight on Geonosis is well-remembered, the duel with Count Dooku at the end of Attack of the Clones is the most exciting fight in the movie. It’s a pretty typical lightsaber battle, but still very enjoyable.
It’s really exciting to watch Obi-Wan and Anakin fight together with lightsabers. And for the first time, we see Yoda use a lightsaber in battle, after being introduced in The Empire Strikes Back back in 1980.
While the duel itself isn’t amazing, it’s much easier to follow than the large-scale Jedi fight. That earlier scene has so many lightsabers going at once that it’s hard to know where to look. This makes the final fight with Count Dooku the most memorable part of Attack of the Clones, even if it’s not particularly special.
7. The Rise Of Skywalker — Kylo Ren Vs. Rey
The final battle between Rey and Kylo Ren is easily the highlight of the last movie in the Sequel Trilogy, which many fans have mixed feelings about. The setting is incredible – taking place amongst the ruins of the second Death Star, it adds a really striking visual element.
The crashing waves during the fight add to the tension, forcing Rey and Kylo to battle both each other and the powerful environment. Although The Rise of Skywalker isn’t considered one of the best Star Wars films, this fight scene is a definite highlight – it’s thrilling to watch, and it’s crucial to Kylo Ren’s eventual change of heart.
6. The Empire Strikes Back — Darth Vader Vs. Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker’s initial duel with Darth Vader is a truly iconic moment in the history of Star Wars. The lightsaber fight is much more dynamic and exciting than anything seen in the first film, creating a captivating battle throughout.
The fight is made more exciting by the changing location. Both Vader and Luke are constantly on the move, with Luke even using objects from around them to make the battle harder. This clever tactic builds tension and keeps the duel consistently engaging.
The film reaches a particularly shocking climax, comparable to Luke’s hand being severed by Vader. Considering the story focuses on the Empire’s growing power, this outcome for the fight feels right—it highlights that Luke wasn’t prepared to defeat Vader just yet.
5. The Phantom Menace — Obi-Wan And Qui-Gon Vs. Darth Maul
When The Phantom Menace came out in 1999, most people were disappointed. But almost everyone agreed that the lightsaber fight with Darth Maul at the end was the highlight of the movie.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I have to say this fight scene is a real game-changer. It finally gave us something totally new: a Jedi Master and his apprentice taking on a Sith Lord wielding a double-bladed lightsaber! That new weapon makes the whole battle incredibly dynamic and surprisingly, Darth Maul really holds his own against them. It’s just a really exciting clash.
What truly elevates this scene is the music. John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates” is considered one of his best Star Wars scores, and it dramatically enhances the excitement of the fight. This makes the scene a standout moment in an otherwise disappointing movie.
4. Return Of The Jedi — Darth Vader Vs. Luke Skywalker
The lightsaber duel that concludes the original Star Wars trilogy isn’t just a spectacular fight; it’s a pivotal moment for Luke Skywalker, pushing him to face his greatest challenges and fundamentally changing his journey.
This scene is powerful because it perfectly shows what’s going through Luke’s mind as he fights his father. The Emperor is trying to tempt him to the dark side by forcing him to kill Darth Vader, and the intensity of the lightsaber duel—the way Luke fights and expresses his emotions—really highlights the depth of feeling in this battle.

2. The Force Awakens — Rey And Finn Vs. Kylo Ren
When The Force Awakens first came out, it was a huge success. Fans loved it as the return to the classic Star Wars they had been hoping for, filled with references to the original movies. Though the initial excitement has faded, many still consider it the strongest film in the sequel trilogy, particularly because of its memorable lightsaber duel.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I honestly think the fight on Starkiller Base is one of the most visually stunning scenes ever put on film. The way the lightsabers glow against the falling snow is just gorgeous, and filming the whole thing mostly in darkness gave it a really unique and powerful look that still holds up incredibly well today.
As a movie fan, I gotta say, the fight scene is incredible. Kylo Ren is just brutal – he doesn’t let up on anyone. The moment he hits Finn… wow, it really felt impactful, and honestly, I was cheering when Rey stepped in to take over. It was a great turning point!

As a huge cinema fan, I honestly think the lightsaber duel on Mustafar is the best one ever filmed. It’s not just the action, it’s the raw emotion and tragedy of watching two friends become enemies – it still gets to me every time. It’s a truly heartbreaking scene, and it’s stuck with me since I first saw it.
The lava-filled background makes this fight incredibly visually stunning, particularly when experienced on a large screen as it was originally intended. Even after all these years, Anakin and Obi-Wan’s lightsaber duel remains the best in the entire Star Wars saga, and it’s likely to stay that way due to the passion and care George Lucas poured into it.
