The Elder Scrolls Online is growing! Soon, players will get access to content that used to cost extra – like the stories from the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild – completely free with the base game.
Starting in March with Update 49, everyone will be able to play the content from the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Imperial City, and Orsinium DLCs without needing to purchase them separately. Later this year, the Greymoor chapter will also be included with the main game.
Right now, The Elder Scrolls Online players can get access to new content either by paying for an ESO Plus subscription (about $15 per month) or by buying each piece of downloadable content individually with in-game currency called Crowns.
In 2015, the Orsinium DLC introduced players to the orcs’ homeland and new dungeons for a price of 3,000 Crowns (approximately $25). Also in 2015, the Imperial City DLC allowed players to revisit a famous location from the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and fight against Molag Bal’s forces, costing 2,500 Crowns (around $20). The following year, in 2016, both the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild DLCs were released, each priced at 2,000 Crowns (about $20).
Okay, so with the Dark Brotherhood DLC, I can actually join a guild of assassins! It’s awesome – I get a whole new skill line focused on, well, being a better killer. And if I side with the Thieves Guild, I get skills that make sneaking and stealing way more effective. I can earn a ton more gold from stolen stuff and even find hidden treasure all over Tamriel. It’s a great way to make some extra cash while staying in the shadows.
I’m really excited for Greymoor to become free-to-play! It’s going to be the biggest addition yet, and it originally came out in 2020. It added a whole new part of Skyrim to explore – the western regions – and lets you go on a quest to take down a seriously powerful, ancient vampire lord. I can’t wait to jump back in when it’s available sometime this winter!
During a recent livestream detailing plans for The Elder Scrolls Online through 2026, developer ZeniMax Online Studios announced that previously paid downloadable content will now be available for free. The presentation also revealed a shift to a seasonal format for the game, including battle passes and updates to character classes. This change follows a 2025 that focused on testing the seasonal model with a single, year-long season called Seasons of the Worm Cult, rather than releasing a major new expansion.
Along with free downloadable content, ZeniMax Online announced they’re developing cross-play for The Elder Scrolls Online. While it’s exciting news, it may take some time before players on PCs, Xbox, and PlayStation can all play together.
