The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Is Once Again Offering Paid Horse Armor DLC
2006 saw Bethesda basking in the triumph of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. To maintain interest in Cyrodiil, they began offering small, paid downloadable content (DLC) for the game. Unbeknownst to them, their first DLC release that April – horse armor – would spark controversy.
Regardless of whether you were into gaming back then, it’s possible you’ve come across the horse armor debate. While downloadable content (DLC) was already around before horse armor, the Horse Armor Pack for Oblivion, priced at 200 Microsoft Points or roughly $2.50, stirred quite a fuss because the armor proved to be practically useless.
In 2025, it’s not unusual to find cosmetic enhancements like this, which gives Bethesda the opportunity to playfully re-release The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and charge players a bit more for horse armor add-ons. As part of today’s unveiling and surprise launch of the remaster, we discovered that Oblivion Remastered will come in two versions – a standard edition and a premium edition. For an additional $10 above the base game price, those who opt for the premium edition will receive new quests for exclusive armors, additional weapon choices, a digital artbook and soundtrack app… you guessed it, horse armor once more, this time in two varieties.
Generally speaking, fans appear to be handling this quite casually. It’s been almost two decades since cosmetic DLC like horse armor came as a surprise, and by now, players are accustomed to paying for purely aesthetic enhancements. As Mat Piscatella from Circana noted on BlueSky, U.S. consumers spent more than $10.4 billion on digital add-ons for PC and console video games in the year 2024. Essentially, horse armor paved the way for Battle Passes to thrive.
Actually, many folks tend to chuckle at the sight of Bethesda playfully jabbing at an issue that used to be a significant controversy.

To be frank, I must acknowledge it. The fact may not be familiar to newcomers, but re-releasing the horse armor as paid DLC once more is a clever nod to when they singlehandedly disrupted the market by offering it for sale initially. I bow down, Todd.

In other words, Oblivion Remastered isn‘t limited to horse armor; instead, it offers mods straight away. A few community-made mods swiftly appeared on Nexus Mods following the game’s release, but they primarily offer minor customization options.
In the meantime, before additional modifications become available, take a moment to explore the perspectives of some gamers who view this latest edition as a remake rather than a remaster. Also, delve into reasons behind Bethesda’s decision to label it as “Remastered” from the get-go.
In Oblivion Remastered, we’ve prepared a detailed guide encompassing all its features. This includes an extensive Interactive Map, step-by-step Walkthroughs for both the Main Questline and each Guild Quest, advice on creating your optimal Character, suggestions for initial actions, and so much more.
