Todd Howard, the director of Bethesda’s highly anticipated open-world RPG The Elder Scrolls 6, recently shared a small update on the game. News about The Elder Scrolls 6 has been scarce since it was first announced in 2018, mainly because Bethesda was busy working on Fallout 76 and Starfield. Now that those projects are finished, The Elder Scrolls 6 is the studio’s top priority. However, despite the increased focus, the game is still likely a ways off from release.
Bethesda’s Todd Howard recently told GQ that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still years away. He emphasized that fans will need to be patient, and suggested the game might not even come out on current gaming consoles. While he didn’t give a specific release date, his comments indicate a longer wait than many are hoping for.
While it might be disappointing to some, Howard confirmed that Bethesda is primarily focused on developing The Elder Scrolls 6 right now. They’re also continuing to support Fallout 76 and working on other Falloutrelated projects, but the majority of their efforts are now dedicated to the next Elder Scrolls* game, which is great news for fans.
Howard explained he prefers to announce projects shortly before they’re released, like they did with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which was revealed and launched on the same day. While he doesn’t promise they’ll do the same with The Elder Scrolls 6, he noted that the successful launch of Oblivion Remastered showed this approach can work well.
Howard explained he prefers to reveal and launch projects unexpectedly. Ideally, he’d like to work on something for a long time and then surprise everyone by releasing it without prior warning.
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for The Elder Scrolls 6. We’re hoping to learn more concrete details about this highly anticipated game as we get closer to 2026.
