The Doomsday Machine writer says Captain Kirk wasn't the most interesting character

As a longtime fan of Star Trek: The Original Series, I have always been drawn to the intriguing character of Mr. Spock, played brilliantly by Leonard Nimoy. However, it’s important to acknowledge that William Shatner’s portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk was equally captivating and essential to the success of the show.

William Shatner, star of Star Trek: The Original Series, held the leading role, yet Leonard Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock ignited a massive fanbase. This wasn’t due to Spock being a superior character to Captain Kirk, but rather that Nimoy was offered more intriguing character aspects to explore in the “The Doomsday Machine” episode. In simpler terms, Shatner may have had a bigger role, but Nimoy’s Spock provided more captivating material for audiences.

According to Norman Spinrad’s perspective in “Captains’ Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages” by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, Captain Kirk wasn’t the most intriguing character in “Star Trek: The Original Series.” Spinrad made it clear that this assessment didn’t undermine Shatner’s acting abilities. Reportedly, these views triggered the envy and line-stealing incidents on set.

Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock was undeniably captivating, with his life harboring unexplored depths. However, the show didn’t delve deeply into the backgrounds of other characters, including the prominent ones played by William Shatner and DeForest Kelley. Although we visited Vulcan and learned about T’Pring and the ritual pon farr, information on other characters remained scarce. It’s plausible that Spock received more focus due to his immense popularity among fans.

It’s undeniable that Spock’s background and past have been explored more extensively in various series and films outside of The Original Series. While J.J. Abrams’ movies provided a glimpse into Kirk’s childhood in an alternate timeline, only The Animated Series and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have offered additional insights on Kirk. In comparison, we know significantly more about Spock.

Spock, being an alien character played by Leonard Nimoy, required exposition for the audience. Yet, some argue that this development may have impacted Captain Kirk’s character portrayed by William Shatner. In my perspective, neither character would have led The Original Series to its enduring success without each other. Adding DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy completed the dynamic trio that set the foundation for the franchise’s lasting influence over the past fifty-eight years.
