When The Only Way Is Essex debuted in 2010, most of the cast members hadn’t had cosmetic procedures and looked very natural.
After 16 years and 37 seasons, the stars of the popular ITV show look dramatically different, having had a lot of cosmetic procedures and treatments.
Several celebrities, including Chloe Sims, Yazmin Oukhellou, Joe Blackman, and Bobby Norris, have publicly shared that they’ve had cosmetic procedures.
The stars of TOWIE are known for trying a wide range of cosmetic procedures, from facelifts at young ages to excessive use of fillers and dental work like ‘Turkey teeth‘.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m seeing a really concerning trend: some celebrities are still opting for cosmetic procedures, even after having negative experiences with surgery. It’s a testament to how much pressure there is to constantly change and ‘improve’ one’s appearance, and frankly, it’s a bit heartbreaking to witness.
So, who do you think has changed the most in the years since their show debut?
Bobby Norris
I was so surprised to see Bobby Norris’s new look! He recently had a facelift at just 39, and the change is really dramatic. It’s amazing what a difference it’s made!
He showed off his new appearance this week, after getting cosmetic surgery in Turkey earlier this year. This came after ten years of using fillers and experiencing online harassment.
The major surgeries Bobby had in March included a neck and face lift, and a lower blepharoplasty.
The surgeries reshaped his face, neck, and around his eyes by lifting and tightening muscles and skin, resulting in a more youthful look.
Bobby recently explained his decision to get cosmetic surgery, saying years of using too many fillers had stretched his skin, making it look thin and saggy – like a balloon losing air.
I’ve always kept a record of things, but I admit I was overdoing it with fillers for about ten years. I was getting them every twelve weeks – which is more often than some people even get their hair done!
It was really obvious, and people need to understand that even though fillers aren’t permanent like surgery, there’s still a point where you can go too far.
Skin loses its firmness over time, and constantly stretching it – like inflating a balloon for years – eventually leads to sagging and a loss of shape.
I was bouncing around so much that by the time I finally stopped, there was no way anything could have calmed me down.
Okay, so last year was rough, health-wise. My doctor was brutally honest, though – honestly, it’s a joke between us now! I was going for so many tests, I swear there’s more of my blood floating around in hospital fridges across Essex than there is of that Mounjaro stuff everyone’s talking about! It’s kinda scary but also…a weird badge of honor, you know? Like, I’m dedicated to figuring this out!
The doctor gave some shocking news: “We have a specialist available, but you’re in critical condition – you might not have twelve hours to live.” But unbelievably, my first thought was, “I can’t be sick, I have plans to go to Sheesh tonight!”
Honestly, hearing that at my age was a shock! It made me realize we all get stuck thinking about age holding us back. And it hit me – why should I wait until I’m older to finally go after what I really want? It felt like a sign to just do it, you know? I’ve been obsessing over this for ages, and this just confirmed it’s now or never!
I’m looking forward to my forties, but I realize life is unpredictable, so I always try to do what feels right for me and be honest about it. I’m aware that sharing that openly, especially as someone in their thirties, might attract criticism online.
Bobby explained his choice to share his surgical recovery online, saying many people don’t talk openly about such things.
I refuse to mislead the people who have supported me for the past 15 years, especially when it comes to something that can’t be fixed with simple home remedies.
We’ve all encountered people who publicly share overly perfect self-care routines – things like claiming they get eight hours of sleep, drink tons of water, and use elaborate skincare. It often feels disingenuous and unbelievable.
It seems like some people, often those popular on social media, visit gyms like David Lloyd, film a few exercises – like three squats with a tripod – and then go on a short wellness retreat. They come back hoping to achieve a similar level of fame and lifestyle as the Kardashians.
It’s tough on people who admire celebrities, especially with social media being so prevalent. I’m grateful we didn’t have that growing up, but I think honesty is the most important thing.
Bobby openly discussed his recovery, explaining he experienced some discomfort for a while after the surgery, but found relief with pain medication.
When show host Ben asked Bobby if he feared regretting the surgery in the future, Bobby responded that he didn’t have a choice, explaining his skin had already been severely stretched.
During the coronavirus lockdowns, ITV started showing a lot of old episodes of TOWIE. Watching it felt like looking through a photo album – it reminded me of ten years of my life, and it was strange seeing how much I’d changed, with a different nose and teeth.
After seeing years of online criticism, I realized things about myself I hadn’t before. It’s hard to notice personal changes as they happen, and it wasn’t until I had time to reflect during lockdown that I really started focusing on my fitness.
I originally wanted to get rid of all my facial fillers, but after going too far with them, I don’t regret getting the facelift. I see it as fixing the damage I’d done to my face.
I don’t follow trends when it comes to what I do with my appearance. I’m actually trying to fix my past mistakes with using too many fillers, and I think it’s important for everyone to understand this. Do what makes you feel good, but with fillers, it’s easy to go too far.
When asked if he’d had enough surgeries, Bobby didn’t say no to the possibility of having more in the future.
He admitted he knew what he should say, but being honest, it was something he couldn’t bring himself to say, and he suspected he likely would anyway.
I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I’m completely over wanting more. I think I struggle with how I see my body, and it’s not something I’d ever decide to do quickly or without thinking it through.
Yazmin Oukhellou
Yazmin, known for her relationship with James Locke on the show, has had several cosmetic procedures, including a rhinoplasty (nose job), chin liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift, and two breast augmentations over the years.
A 31-year-old woman recently had a facelift at Serene Cosmetics in Istanbul and shared a photo of her bruised and bandaged face on Instagram.
She confessed to feeling nervous before the surgery, but emphasized it was a personal decision to improve her well-being. She also acknowledged she expected to receive negative comments online for sharing the details.
She filmed herself getting ready at the hotel that morning, and then showed the process of being prepped for a procedure in the preparation area.
Her next Instagram Story slide showed her recovering as her face was taped up at the sides.
Two years ago, Yazmin had cosmetic surgery, including a £4,150 nose job and a £1,750 chin reduction procedure.
In 2020, Yazmin underwent a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction with a surgeon in Turkey, even though she publicly promoted fitness through her wellness retreat.
Yazmin, a cast member on TOWIE since 2015, has previously shared with her followers that she’s had breast augmentation surgery twice and a nose job.
She had surgery on her nose to fix a bump that resulted from a childhood injury.
She’s admitted to getting cosmetic fillers and Botox in the past. However, in 2018, Yazmin chose to remove her lip fillers, wanting a more natural appearance.
She previously defended her decision to have surgery, explaining that anyone considering it – especially those with limited options like hers – should feel comfortable and free from judgment.
‘This is the reason I have decided to be so open about it and not lie like others have.
Everyone has the right to make their own decisions about their body, and it’s unfair for others to criticize or shame them for those choices or how they look. We should all focus on living our own lives instead of judging others.
A Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, involves transferring fat from other parts of your body to the buttocks.
Often called the most dangerous cosmetic procedure, it carries a significant risk, with approximately one in 3,000 patients dying, according to reports from 2018.
Joe Blackman
Joe Blackman, who joined the show in 2023, is another co-star that has undergone cosmetic surgery.
The reality star recently revealed his severely worn-down teeth, which were even bleeding, before traveling to Turkey to get veneers.
Joe shared photos of himself before undergoing a treatment, which he said cost a significant £7,664.
He sat in the dentist’s chair and had his teeth filed down while his boyfriend, Junaid Ahmed, recorded the process.
After posting about his experience online, Joe received a warning from reality TV star Lauren Goodger, known for her appearances on TOWIE.
She said she wished she hadn’t done it, admitting she generally regrets all surgeries. However, she emphasized that the most important thing is that you feel good about your choices and that you’ll look beautiful no matter what.
Many other fans sided with Lauren, predicting he’d be sorry and pointing out that his teeth looked fine before.
Okay, so I was chatting with someone about their teeth, and they were suggesting I should have just bleached them – they actually said my teeth looked great before any whitening! It was so refreshing, honestly. They pointed out that I already have naturally nice teeth, and they really appreciated seeing someone with a more natural, individual look – not just another perfect, cookie-cutter smile. It’s a good reminder that embracing your natural features can be really attractive!
Intentionally damaging healthy teeth is wrong and should be illegal. A responsible dentist would never perform such a procedure, and it’s deeply unethical (according to a dental professional with over 30 years of experience).
Oh no! Once you’ve altered your teeth like this, there’s no going back, and your natural teeth were beautiful. These ‘Turkey teeth’ are really outdated and a fast track to damaging your teeth – you’ll likely end up regretting it.
That’s outrageous! Your teeth looked perfectly healthy. It’s completely unacceptable to suggest otherwise.
Joe brushed off the comments and said he is excited to see his new smile.
Lauren Goodger
Lauren Goodger returned to the reality show TOWIE in 2024. She first became well-known on the show as one of its original stars, appearing in the first season back in 2010.
The actress, now 39, has rejoined and left the show several times since initially departing in 2012. Her exit followed her split from Mark Wright, who is now married to Michelle Keegan and they are expecting a baby.
Lauren made a quick appearance on the show in 2016, but reports last year indicated she would be returning full-time, feeling ready to return to public life.
The actress has always been open about having cosmetic procedures, including a nose job in 2011 to repair a broken nose from an injury.
She also underwent a breast augmentation surgery, transforming her 34D chest size to 34E in 2013.
In 2023, Lauren revealed she’d had a Brazilian butt lift in 2017, but now wanted to reverse the procedure.
The celebrity shared that she traveled to Turkey for a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), but called it ‘the worst experience’ she’s ever had.
Lauren expressed a strong desire to regain the natural shape of her buttocks, but she’s worried it’s impossible because there’s no way to undo a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure.
She explained that she wasn’t sure how to fix the situation yet. She’s investigating whether it’s possible to reverse the procedure, and is considering fat removal as a potential solution, though she’s unsure if it’s viable. She plans to consult with multiple surgeons to explore all her options.
The celebrity has also had lip filler injections. In February 2023, she received the same lip filler technique – called the ‘butterfly effect’ – as Katie Price, and proudly displayed her fuller lips.
She recently got lip fillers, a procedure called the ‘butterfly effect’ from Lift Aesthetics. She mentioned she was still wearing tape after the procedure, which was making it hard to speak clearly.
I’m still quite swollen, but they used a really innovative technique, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.
She recently shared that she’s moving forward with a breast reduction, something she’s been wanting to do for a while but was previously too nervous to pursue.
She looked stunning in a green and white swimsuit and shared with her Instagram followers that anxiety has kept her from getting elective surgeries and treatments.
She explained that past experiences caused her significant anxiety, leading her to give up caffeine and alcohol. This anxiety has also prevented her from traveling or even undergoing routine medical procedures.
Today I spoke with the incredible surgeon, @simonsmithsurgeon, because I’m considering having my breast implants removed.
I’m ready to move forward with this, even though it’s scary. I realize it’s a good thing for my health and I don’t need their support anymore. I’m looking forward to feeling like myself again.
Sam and Billie Faiers
The Faiers sisters have always been unapologetic about how their appearances have changed over the years, even though they look very different from when they first appeared on TOWIE.
In a 2019 episode of The Mummy Diaries, both stars openly stated they’ve never used Botox, even though their appearances have changed since the show began.
Billie shared that her makeup artist told her some models get Botox to subtly lift their eyebrows.
Despite the option being available, she preferred facials and stated they’d never used Botox, always prioritizing skincare instead, as Sam confirmed.
She later added that people often assume celebrities have had plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures.
Sam shared that many people think she’s had cosmetic procedures like eye surgery and fillers, but she firmly stated she’s never had Botox.
She reminisced about her time on TOWIE, explaining that a lot changes with time. ‘When you first appear on TV, you look so different ten years later – no one looks the same from their late teens to their late twenties!’
I’ve been a fan since they left TOWIE back in 2014! It was amazing to see them get their own show, ‘The Mummy Diaries’. It really followed their lives – everything from their weddings to becoming parents, and it was so lovely to watch their journey.
Sam decided to leave the show in 2021, as she had always planned to do when her kids began school.
After ten years, Billie and Greg decided to wrap up their reality show, The Family Diaries, with filming concluding in November.
After nearly a decade of filming The Mummy Diaries and sharing our lives on @familydiariesofficial, we’re officially saying goodbye to the show. It’s been an amazing journey, but it’s come to an end.
What an incredible journey it’s been! From welcoming our children into the world and watching them grow, to navigating all the joys and challenges of parenthood – the laughter, the tears, the celebrations, and the difficult moments – we’ve shared so much. We’ve also enjoyed fun times with friends, celebrated with bachelor and bachelorette parties, built a house, and of course, gotten married!
We’re so happy we could create these memories and share them with everyone!
Amy Childs
Amy Childs openly talked about getting a breast enhancement after having surgery at just 18 years old.
The 35-year-old reality star has undergone a significant physical transformation with procedures including breast augmentation, Botox, lip fillers, liposuction, and veneers.
You know, I’ve been following Amy’s journey for a while now, and she’s really come into her own. After having four wonderful kids – Polly, Ritchie, and her adorable twins Billy and Amelia – she’s decided to step away from cosmetic surgery. She’s admitted she wasn’t happy with how things were going and felt like she’d gone too far, even describing herself as looking ‘like a freak.’ It’s so refreshing to see her embracing a more natural look and focusing on what truly matters – her family!
In a 2022 interview with The Sun, she shared that she hadn’t had cosmetic surgery in quite a while, and becoming a mother had completely shifted her perspective on things.
When I was on TOWIE, I really got caught up in how I looked. But now that I’m 32, I’ve changed my perspective completely.
I’ve really embraced who I am now. My body has changed since having children – I’m no longer a size 8 – but my two wonderful children are what truly matter to me, and I’m completely content.
As a teenager, Amy had breast augmentation surgery to increase her bust size from an A-cup to a D-cup. At 23, she had a second surgery, increasing her size to a 30EE.
In May 2019, a mother of two had an eight-hour surgery to address chest pain caused by a tear in her left breast implant. A month later, doctors found a lump in her breast caused by leaking implant material.
The celebrity, who was hospitalized for a week due to a difficult experience, has now reduced the size of her breast implants from an EE cup to a C cup.
Ferne McCann
Ferne joined the reality show TOWIE in 2013 and stayed for three years. Since then, she’s been very candid about the cosmetic surgeries she’s had.
As a lifestyle expert, I remember when Ferne shared that she’d had a nose job back in 2016. She actually revealed the results live on This Morning shortly after the procedure – it was quite the moment!
She became emotional while sharing her life story with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, explaining the reasons behind her recent decision.
Ferne openly shared the reasons behind her decision, explaining that a long-held insecurity and negative comments online played a significant role. She explained she simply wanted a minor adjustment, as she had been teased about her nose at school and felt it dominated her features.
It still looks familiar from the front, so the changes weren’t jarring, but the side view is noticeably different.
Ferne confessed she was surprisingly emotional, explaining that despite appearing confident and outgoing, she was deeply affected by something.
The celebrity shared that she’s struggled with insecurity since she was 12 years old, long before becoming famous.
It all began in high school when boys started calling me ‘goose,’ and that really stuck with me. Years later, online trolls made things even worse.
Ferne changed her mind about lip fillers last year. She had her previous injections removed and said she regretted getting them in the first place.
Posting a video of the final results after getting the filler dissolved, she started by saying, ‘Okay everyone, this is a really important moment for me because I want to be honest and share what happened with my lips.’
I regret getting lip fillers years ago. I rushed into it without researching properly and ended up choosing unqualified practitioners. As a result, I received a lot of negative comments about how my lips looked.
She went on to say that despite being used to public scrutiny, it still affected her and changed how she viewed those around her.
As a parent, especially with daughters, I thought about how I’d feel if they ever wanted something like that, and it completely changed my point of view.
She admitted she always felt they looked silly. She explained that the filler had moved around, creating bumps and an unnatural shape!
Chloe Sims
Chloe Sims, 44, first became well-known on the ITV2 show in 2011. She’s always been honest about having cosmetic procedures, and it’s been reported she’s spent over £100,000 on changing her appearance.
The actress revealed last month that when she started on the show, she was pressured to have cosmetic surgery, recalling that she had a breast augmentation as her first procedure.
In an interview on Paul Brunson’s ‘We Need To Talk’ podcast, she described the fashion of that time as focusing almost entirely on a very specific body type: extremely thin with large breasts, similar to what you’d see with glamour models.
I used to be really focused on getting a larger chest, believing it would solve all my problems. Once I achieved that, when I started appearing on TOWIE, I was suddenly offered all kinds of cosmetic procedures.
She explained that she could have gotten anything she desired without paying. But she decided to aim higher, and surprisingly, it almost worked – the venue simply didn’t have enough space.
Chloe told her surgeon she desired a noticeably enhanced, artificial-looking bust, and the surgeon responded that they would do their best to achieve her desired result.
After waking up from surgery, her surgeon explained that the breast implants she’d chosen were too large for her body.
Chloe needed a smaller breast implant – one that was the right size for her body and wouldn’t cause any health problems.
As a lifestyle expert, I often advise clients considering breast augmentation to really listen to their surgeon. Sometimes, a surgeon has to say ‘no’ to a very large implant, especially if someone has a smaller frame. It’s not about being difficult; it’s about safety. Going too big can seriously increase the risk of complications like infection, stretched skin, and even tissue damage – where cells actually die. Your health is the priority, and a good surgeon will always guide you towards a safe and natural-looking result.
Chloe also revealed during the interview that she hasn’t changed her breast implants, but she’s been considering getting them removed for some time now.
She explained she doesn’t want to go through with surgery just to remove something she dislikes. She’s not happy with how they look and usually tries to conceal them, so she doesn’t see a reason to have a major operation.
The reality TV star has had breast augmentation and a Brazilian butt lift in the past. She also talked several years ago about having facial fillers dissolved.
