Warning: Spoilers for The Boys season 5, episode 5, “One-Shots”
The cast of The Boys reacts to that latest shocking death.
As The Boys heads into its final three episodes, the show takes a surprising detour in “One Shots,” offering quick glimpses into the lives of some of its secondary characters. This episode focuses on Firecracker, Black Noir, Sister Sage, Soldier Boy, and even Butcher’s elderly dog, Terror.
The episode “One Shots” strongly hints that a character will die. Ultimately, it’s Firecracker who meets her end. She betrays her former church on TV, hoping to gain Homelander’s approval, but Homelander kills her in the final scene for making an offhand remark.
During a conversation with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender and Liam Crowley, actress Curry revealed she was aware her character wouldn’t survive. She explained that she always felt Firecracker was very close to death, as she put it, “knocking on death’s door.”
I always expected my character would die. The show’s creator, Eric Kripke, hinted early on that her purpose was to address the idea of someone believing they’re special enough to avoid consequences – the saying, “the leopards won’t eat my face.” So, it was inevitable that something bad would happen to her.
I suspected her character was going to die, but I didn’t know how it would happen. I honestly had no clue. I even asked the showrunner when we’d start filming season 5, jokingly asking how long my character would survive, because her character was clearly nearing death at the end of season 4. I’m thankful it wasn’t an illness that caused her death, and I’m glad she had the opportunity to reveal a more vulnerable side to her character, Firecracker, before the end.
Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, explained why the character Firecracker stayed with Homelander despite having ties to her former community. He compared her situation to real-world examples of people distancing themselves from political leaders for not showing unwavering support – citing current events like the falling out between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Donald Trump, and even historical parallels like those seen under Stalin’s rule.
I’ve noticed a pattern with people close to powerful, self-centered leaders. These leaders demand complete loyalty, forcing those around them to abandon their principles. It’s only after someone has completely compromised themselves and sacrificed everything they believe in that the leader discards them.
I’ve noticed a really strange pattern with this person. One minute they’ll treat you like a complete extremist, the next like someone disposable, and then maybe even give you a nickname like ‘Firecracker.’ It’s not always the obvious opponents who get punished, though. Often, it’s the people closest to them, even for something really minor. It’s like they can’t tolerate even the smallest perceived offense from those they’re closest to.
Jared Padalecki was questioned about the death of Firecracker, since his character, Soldier Boy, was the one who exposed her divided loyalties. Padalecki explained that Soldier Boy didn’t really care about Firecracker, even though they were intimate. He emphasized that Soldier Boy’s only real concern is for his son, Homelander.
To be honest, I don’t believe he truly cared for her. She seemed like just another conquest to Soldier Boy, and that really highlights how damaged he is. His past experiences have left him emotionally detached, something we’ll explore more in the prequel. He’s able to easily distance himself from anything meaningful, except when it comes to his son. His feelings for his son are the only thing currently motivating him, a surprising paternal instinct that’s emerging. Everything else seems unimportant to him.
Okay, so the most fascinating part of Firecracker’s storyline, for me, wasn’t how she died, but that Homelander showed her a sliver of mercy. He was genuinely annoyed she didn’t fully worship him as a god, but he surprisingly gave her multiple outs – chances to just leave and save herself. It was heartbreaking to watch, because she was so desperate for his approval that she wouldn’t even take those chances, ultimately choosing to stay and face what happened. It really highlighted how twisted their dynamic was.
Okay, let me tell you about this episode. Directed by Phil Sgriccia and written by Judalina Neira, it’s seriously messed up… and hilarious. We’ve got a bunch of comedic actors hanging out at this mansion, and right in the middle of their fun, Homelander and Soldier Boy show up hunting for V1. Things get very messy, very quickly. I’m talking about a crossover event where, and I’m not kidding, The Boys executive producer Seth Rogen actually gets ripped in half. It’s a darkly funny, shocking moment that really sets the tone for what’s to come.
“One Shots” includes a highly awaited reunion for fans of Supernatural, with Jensen Ackles sharing significant screen time with his former co-stars Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins. The newly introduced characters with superpowers also meet their end after a good battle.
Ultimately, the situation turns tragic when Firecracker makes a critical mistake. She compares Homelander to an ordinary person and suggests he simply needs affection. This is the one thing he can’t tolerate, and he impulsively kills her. This brutal act underscores a key point: Homelander is impossible to satisfy, and it highlights just how dangerous he is throughout The Boys.
The Boys streams Wednesdays on Prime Video.
