Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who created the sci-fi series The Boroughs, have announced that they are planning a second season on Netflix.
The Duffer Brothers created the show, which is now a hit on Netflix, currently ranking as the fourth most popular TV series on the platform.
The story follows Sam, played by Alfred Molina, a man hesitant to embrace life after his wife’s passing. He finds himself in a retirement home and unexpectedly stumbles upon a mysterious and otherworldly plot.

When a strange danger threatens to steal the residents’ time in a peaceful retirement community, a group of unexpected heroes must band together to save the day.
Okay, so I was checking out the cast list for The Boroughs, and seriously, it’s packed with amazing actors! We’re talking Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, Denis O’Hare… it just keeps going with Clarke Peters, Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg, and even Jane Kaczmarek. It’s a pretty impressive lineup, honestly!

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, the creators, Addiss and Matthews, mentioned in an IGN interview that they originally intended for the show to have three seasons.
According to Addiss, they have a detailed plan for the show’s three seasons, even knowing exactly how the series will end with the final shot of the final episode.
He explained that while the specifics of their approach might evolve, they had solutions for all the challenges and a timeline for addressing them. Their goal for the first season was to provide a satisfying emotional arc while still leaving some mysteries for viewers to ponder.
Addiss explained that they designed the first season to feel complete, with a satisfying conclusion, just in case the show wasn’t picked up for another season.
He explained that if the show does well, they’re eager to reveal more about the central mystery: What is ‘Mother’? They already know the answer and are hoping the show’s popularity will give them the opportunity to share it with viewers.
When asked if the show would continue focusing on the Mother’s storyline for all three seasons, Addiss clarified that they hadn’t committed to that, emphasizing the importance of introducing fresh elements.

Our goal is to provide satisfying answers to all the viewers’ questions over the course of three seasons. However, that doesn’t mean season two won’t bring some surprising and unexpected events.
We don’t see this as a typical seasonal horror show. Instead, we view it as a single, intricate story with ongoing, unexpected twists and turns, but it all connects as one continuous narrative.
Toward the end of the interview, the show’s creators were asked about the central idea for the second season. Addiss explained it would explore the question: “What would you do if you had another opportunity?”
