The Borderlands failure may be a sign of things to come for Star Trek: Section 31

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than his fair share of cinematic adaptations, I can confidently say that the Borderlands film fiasco was a colossal disaster, not unlike a level 1 noob trying to take on the final boss. The movie was riddled with bad casting, a convoluted plot, and an apparent lack of understanding for the source material – all while attempting to emulate the success of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Borderlands movie’s flop can hardly be overstated; it was a colossal disappointment across the board. From questionable casting choices, to a convoluted script, lacking appreciation for the original content, and forced integration of concepts from another series in an attempt to modernize and differentiate – this is the result of Hollywood’s repetitive, unoriginal landscape, where everyone seems to be chasing the next Guardians of the Galaxy.

Here’s the problem with that, firstly; you can never duplicate a then-original concept. Secondly, no one wanted another Guardians of the Galaxy film. Least of all one that wasn’t a direct sequel. So to try and continue to fall into this gimmick of trying to make a new IP in the same formula of a successful prior film will rarely if ever work. Quality, not concept, that’s the way to win over fans.

Borderlands didn’t succeed because it aimed to mimic the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a worrying sign for Star Trek fans. Contrarily, Star Trek: Section 31 isn’t attempting to replicate traditional Star Trek; instead, it’s striving to emulate the style of Guardians of the Galaxy. This is evident in its inclusion of Sam Richardson, a talented comedic actor, who seems out of place in an espionage-focused production.

It seems that Section 31 is portrayed as the tormenting division in Star Trek, with a reputation for being cruel. They appear to be the antagonists. However, in the trailer, Richardson provides humor, suggesting a lighter tone may be intended by the filmmaker and studio when depicting this clandestine paramilitary organization that operates outside of Starfleet’s chain of command.

They’re attempting to create an entertaining, action-driven, shoot-em-up film, relying on Michelle Yeoh’s stardom and clever dialogue. However, the Killjoys came close but failed to fully achieve this due to the fact that an original production couldn’t compete with the popularity and reputation of a movie that might be seen as a copycat of the Guardians series.

Just like Weird Al Yankovic attempting a Michael Bolton-like style or Sabrina Carpenter starting a Slipknot tribute band wouldn’t appeal to their original fans, changing Star Trek’s established character could lead to a bigger failure, as fans are attracted to the unique traits they initially loved about it.

Star Trek delves into moral stories. The characters aren’t cynical or flat with their portrayals of violence meant solely for humor. While Section 31 might not be identical to a Guardians-like series as the trailer implies, we’re not merely speculating without cause.

The trailer suggests that the movie will have a light-hearted tone, featuring lively music accompanying scenes of violence and humor. It implies that there will be moments where the action suddenly transitions to a humorous quip or joke. This is the impression the trailer aims to create, although it’s important to note that this might not necessarily reflect the actual movie’s content accurately. However, it’s clear that this is the intended vibe the filmmakers want viewers to expect from the movie.

It’s important to express some worry that this movie might not succeed, given how poorly Borderlands fared when it tried to achieve similar shortcomings. They based their work on a popular franchise, fundamentally altered its essence into something unrecognizable, and in their quest to capitalize on the Guardians of the Galaxy style, they seem to have missed the mark entirely. It’s worth noting that this concept has been around for nearly a decade now.

It is time to move on.
