The Evil Dead series is currently enjoying a surge in popularity, with two more movies planned. This excitement has prompted many fans to rewatch the original films, now available on Apple TV.
According to FlixPatrol, the horror-comedy series Ash vs Evil Dead is back in the Top 10 TV shows on the Apple TV Store, currently at number 8. This renewed interest is likely due to the announcement that Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh film in the Evil Dead series, has started filming in Auckland, New Zealand.
Ash vs Evil Dead Was a Sequel to Sam Raimi’s Movies
Between 2015 and 2018, Starz aired three seasons (30 episodes) of Ash vs Evil Dead. The show was popular for reuniting Bruce Campbell with his iconic role as Ash Williams, the main character from Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead films: The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), and Army of Darkness (1992).
The new series brings back our sarcastic, chainsaw-using hero as he heads back to Elk Grove, Michigan. He teams up with Ruby (Lucy Lawless), a former foe, and allies Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) for one last, incredibly violent battle to save humanity.
Despite having dedicated fans, the Starz show Ash vs Evil Dead didn’t attract a large enough audience to warrant another season. A renewal would have meant more episodes for those who enjoyed it, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.
The Evil Dead Franchise Is Busier Than Ever
The Evil Dead franchise returned to life five years after its television cancellation with the 2023 film Evil Dead Rise. Written and directed by Lee Cronin, the movie was a critical and commercial success, earning over $146 million globally and becoming the highest-grossing installment in the series.
Bruce Campbell mainly worked on Evil Dead Rise as an executive producer. He also secretly provided a voice cameo, appearing as a character heard on an old record in the film. Although it’s not explicitly shown in the movie, director Lee Cronin believes this character is actually a version of Ash from another time.
The positive reception of Rise led Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema to approve more Evil Dead films. Although director Lee Cronin had some ideas for a follow-up to Rise, he ended up writing and directing a different project.
Sébastien Vaniček will direct and co-write the next Evil Dead film, titled Evil Dead Burn, which is scheduled for release on July 24, 2026. The movie will star Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Tandi Wright, and George Pullar, and tells a standalone story within the Evil Dead universe.
With Burn set to launch, filming has begun on a second Evil Dead spinoff called Evil Dead Wrath. Francis Galluppi is directing, and Charlotte Hope and Jessica McNamee are the main stars. Bruce Campbell, like with Rise, will also be an executive producer on these two new movies.
Ash vs Evil Dead is available to rent or own on PVOD platforms like Apple TV.
