Tesla is ending production of its original Model S and Model X with a special, limited-edition run called the “Signature Series.” Only 350 of these vehicles will be made—250 sedans and 100 SUVs with six seats—as a final tribute to these iconic models. Tesla is offering these exclusively to a select group of original owners and early supporters, and the cars will feature the same branding as the initial 2012 launch, recalling the time when Tesla first became a major player in the auto industry.
The special farewell edition features unique design details tailored to what collectors want. Each one is finished in an exclusive Garnet Red color not found on any other model, with matching red door handles on the sedan. The exterior gets a luxurious touch with gold ‘T’ badges in the front and special gold ‘Signature’ and ‘Plaid’ emblems in the rear. Inside, the cabin is strikingly white, covered in soft Alcantara, and features numbered dash plates identifying each vehicle’s unique build number. The driving experience is further enhanced with a custom lighting sequence when entering, gold ‘Plaid’ lights that shine on the ground, and seats with elegant gold piping.
High-performance versions of this vehicle get special details to justify their higher price. The lower profile model features bold 21-inch wheels and powerful carbon-ceramic brakes with eye-catching gold calipers. The larger Model X keeps its traditional red brakes and comes with large 22-inch wheels. Both models include the distinctive (and sometimes debated) yoke steering wheel, a luxury package, black wheel covers, and a unique key fob. This specialized SUV is a significant investment at $159,420 – a full $30,000 more than the price of the standard models, which are becoming older designs.
Tesla is ending production of its original luxury vehicles, marking a significant change in the company’s focus and how its factories operate. Elon Musk has described this as a respectful farewell, recognizing the important part these vehicles played in popularizing electric cars worldwide. The Fremont factory is now being completely reconfigured to build Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robots. Before the assembly lines are shut down for good, Tesla will host a special event in May to celebrate these foundational vehicles.
