Terry Farrell thought Worf should have left Jadzia Dax to die in “Change of Heart”
As a dedicated Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours pondering over the intricacies of the Deep Space Nine universe, I firmly believe that Terry Farrell’s character, Jadzia Dax, deserved a more poignant and well-crafted farewell. The abrupt nature of her death in the season six finale felt like a hasty decision rather than a thoughtful sendoff for such a beloved character.
Terry Farrell played the Trill Jadzia Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for six seasons. When she asked for reduced screen time for the final season, her request was denied, and, instead, her character was set to be killed off. It was a moment in Star Trek history that got a heated response from fans, especially in how her death actually happened…at the hands of Gul Dukat, the Cardassian dictator, in the finale of season six. It was a death scene that had little build up and, though Worf’s [Michael Dorn] response made it powerful, it would have been much more so if Jadzia had been allowed to die in an earlier sixth season episode “Change of Heart.”
In the given episode, Jadzia and Worf are tasked with locating a Cardassian officer planning to defect. Unfortunately, Jadzia gets wounded severely, causing Worf immense emotional turmoil. Despite his duty, he chooses to remain by her side, leaving the mission incomplete. The defector is eventually found and eliminated. As revealed in a Deep Space Nine DVD extra, Farrell believed that it would have been more fitting for Worf to depart to accomplish the mission, leaving Jadzia’s fate uncertain. [via Looper]
Leaving her behind would have provided Dorn with ample content for the remaining episodes of the sixth season, as he grappled not only with sorrow but remorse over his inability to aid his spouse. This scenario would also highlight his warrior nature, a trait that has historically been prominent among the Klingons. Jadzia’s untimely death ten episodes later comes as a surprise, and while it startles Worf, its emotional resonance is not as profound as it could have been if he had made the painful decision to accomplish the mission at the cost of his wife’s life.
Even today, the demise of Jadzia in the final episode of season six remains puzzling and seems almost incidental, as if it was simply used to remove Farrell from the cast. It’s hard to fathom why the producers wouldn’t have recognized the wisdom in killing off Jadzia during “Change of Heart.
