Taylor Sheridan’s New 13-Part Western Series Is So Close To Beating Another CBS Hit In Viewership

Taylor Sheridan’s 13-episode Western series Marshalsis close to overtaking another CBS show.

Unlike other shows connected to Yellowstone, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is the first to air on a traditional broadcast network and the first to center around just one character. Luke Grimes reprises his role as Kayce Dutton in the series, which has proven to be a hit for CBS, achieving record-breaking viewership and quickly earning a second season renewal.

A new CBS series is giving Taylor Sheridan’s dramas a run for their money. Nielsen ratings show that Tracker is one of only two scripted shows to attract over 7 million viewers during the week of May 11th to 17th. Currently, Marshals is close behind, with just 100,000 fewer viewers than Tracker.

The rivalry between Tracker and Marshals isn’t surprising. Since Marshals premiered in March, the two CBS shows have consistently switched between being the most popular show on Paramount+. This back-and-forth highlights just how quickly Marshals has become a hit.

The TV show Marshals is currently the most-watched program on broadcast television, and one of the most popular scripted shows overall, including those on streaming services. According to Nielsen data from earlier this year, which measured viewership over 28 days, Marshals comes in a close second to the fifth season of Stranger Things. Stranger Things has 30.6 million viewers, while Marshals has 26.5 million.

With nearly 16.5 million viewers, Tracker is also performing well. However, when looking at total viewership over a longer period – like 28 days or more – Marshals ultimately attracts a significantly larger audience than the CBS show, despite their weekly competition.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, who also oversees the entire series, and led by showrunner Spencer Hudnut, Marshals centers around Kayce, who leaves the Yellowstone Ranch to become a U.S. Marshal. Using his experience with ranch work and grappling with a difficult history, he works to uphold the law throughout Montana, all while trying to manage his family and the emotional toll of the job.

In addition to the previously announced cast, Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham will appear in Marshals. Both season two of Marshals and season four of Tracker are scheduled to premiere on CBS later in the year, but the specific dates haven’t been announced yet.
