The Housemaid is reaching the end of the road with one final feat for Sydney Sweeney.
Despite facing some challenges and box office setbacks, Sydney Sweeney finished 2025 successfully with her film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel. It opened strong, earning $19 million, particularly impressive considering it was released alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash. The movie continued to perform well, and by February, it became Sweeney’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing the seven-year record previously held by Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
After about five months in cinemas, The Housemaid‘s theatrical run is nearly over. Despite being available for streaming, the film has achieved one last impressive box office result for its star, Sweeney. Box Office Mojo reports that The Housemaid has now earned over $401 million globally, from a production budget of just $35 million. This makes it the first Sweeney film to surpass $400 million at the box office, and it’s likely to be their biggest achievement to date.
Following the huge success of the first movie, Lionsgate has quickly approved a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, also based on a book by McFadden. Alex Wolff will once again play Millie Calloway, and Paul Feig will return as director. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall.
The film’s popularity is largely thanks to its impressive cast, including Amanda Seyfried and Brendan Sklenar. Critics have praised The Housemaid, drawing comparisons to the suspenseful erotic thrillers of the 80s and 90s. The story centers around a woman hired by a rich family, but both she and the family are hiding secrets that eventually come to light, leading to a tangled web of jealousy, heartbreak, and lies. Currently, The Housemaid holds a 73% critic rating and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A key reason for the movie’s success is its December release date, which has proven to be a particularly good time for the star. She experienced a similar boost last year when her romantic comedy, Anyone But You, came out in December 2023. That film was a huge hit, earning $220 million on a $25 million budget and significantly raising her profile, as well as launching the career of Glen Powell.
Following the success of the first film, a sequel to The Housemaid is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027 – exactly two years after the original. It will be released alongside the new Marvel film, Avengers: Secret Wars. Kirsten Dunst is the first new actor confirmed to join the cast, and Michele Morrone will reprise his role as Enzo, the groundskeeper for the Winchester family.
In the next installment, Millie takes a job with the Garrick family, but is told to avoid any contact with the mother, Wendy. This leads her to believe something is wrong at home, and she decides to investigate on her own. The book was recognized as the Best Mystery & Thriller of 2023 by Goodreads Choice Awards.
Sydney Sweeney is having a strong comeback after a challenging year, with exciting projects in both film and television. She’s reprising her role as Cassie Howard for what’s expected to be the final season of Euphoria, and is currently filming The Custom of the Country. Plus, she has two more projects in the works: a live-action Gundam adaptation and a biopic called Scandalous.
The Housemaid is now streaming on Starz, while The Housemaid’s Secret will release in December 2027.
