Suzanne Shaw said she was completely blindsided by her recent breakup, but she’s been focusing on self-love, especially since becoming a grandmother.
The 44-year-old former Hear’Say singer became emotional last month while sharing details about her split from her fiancé, Sam Greenfield, after being together for 11 years. She described the breakup as both difficult and surprising.
She happily announced in March that she was now a grandmother! Her son, Corey, and his girlfriend, Erin, welcomed a baby boy named Colton.
Suzanne recently told fans she’s finally starting to feel better after a very difficult year, opening up about the challenges she faced following her breakup.
In a video posted to Instagram on Saturday, Suzanne hinted that her split from her former fiancé, Sam, happened unexpectedly.
It’s been an unbelievable year. Just on New Year’s Eve, I was writing in my journal about how thankful I was for my life, my family, and how happy I was in my relationship. I was so excited about what the future held for us. But less than a day later, everything changed completely.
I was completely shocked, but then I remembered something I’d written in my journal: “I’m ready to embrace life – all the wonderful and challenging parts of it.”
It really zeroed in on the difficult parts, and it’s been incredibly challenging and painful. But I’m thankful I was able to apply everything I’ve learned about self-care and self-love to get through it.
Shifting her focus to her grandson’s arrival, Suzanne explained that she’s been making a conscious effort to practice self-love every day, and she’s already noticing positive results.
Becoming a grandmother has been wonderful! My grandson is absolutely beautiful, and I adore him. He’s brought so much joy and love into my life, which I really needed.
He’s doing a little better now, which is great. Right now, I’m really focused on self-love and enjoying not having to make compromises in my life.
Suzanne announced last month that she and Darren Day are now grandparents. Their son, Corey, recently had a baby.
She shared the joyful news on Instagram, announcing that Corey’s girlfriend, Erin, had welcomed a baby boy named Colton, and posted several adorable photos.
Suzanne and Darren, both 57, had a difficult relationship that ended in 2005, but they’ve clearly reconciled and appear happy together as they proudly showed off their new baby.
In 2003, while performing together in a touring production of Summer Holiday, Darren and Suzanne had an affair, even though they were both engaged to others.
Darren’s life and career suffered greatly after he left his partner and their seven-week-old son, Corey, on Mother’s Day in 2005. This happened while she was struggling with postpartum depression, and he allegedly said he wasn’t suited for family life.
Darren playfully acknowledged the age difference between him and Suzi Shaw as they became grandparents, joking in a post that he’s old enough for the role, while Suzi isn’t quite there yet! He shared the message along with his affection for his grandchild, tagging Suzi in the post.
Suzanne was deeply moved as she penned these words: ‘A beautiful and wonderful thing has happened – my son Corey has become a father to a sweet baby boy, all snug in blue.’
Oh my gosh, she just posted the sweetest thing about Colton! She said, ‘Colton – Nanny loves you SO much, forever and ever, you’re absolutely perfect!’ And then she joked about needing glasses like her dad, but she’s already planning to teach him handstands and cartwheels! It’s just… everything. I’m seriously melting! She’s the best nanny ever, and Colton is so lucky! I can’t even handle the cuteness!
Suzanne’s friends showered her with supportive comments online, including a message from her former Hear’Say bandmate, Kym Marsh, who wrote, ‘This is wonderful!!! Welcome to the grandparent club!!! You’re going to love it!’
Myleene Klass simply wrote ‘Huge congrats!’ and Nat Anderson commented ‘How beautiful!!! Congratulations to you all!’
Darren and Suzanne dated for about a year and a half and even got engaged, but they separated just three months after their son, Corey, was born.
The former Hollyoaks actor reportedly ended things with Suzanne, telling her he didn’t want to be involved with family life.
Last year, Suzanne shared on Vanessa Feltz’s show that her ex-partner unexpectedly left her – she described him simply going out for a curry and not returning. She also mentioned that her subsequent experience with postnatal depression felt predictable, given the circumstances.
However the pair have been on good terms for years as co-parents to their son.
Darren married Stephanie Dooley, but they divorced in 2019. They had reconciled nine years earlier after Darren had an affair with his former partner, Suzanne.
He recently got engaged to Sophie Ladds and shared a heartfelt message to her on Valentine’s Day.
Last month, Suzanne shared a tearful video on Instagram, revealing her surprising and difficult breakup with her fiancé, Sam Greenfield.
Suzanne and Sam got engaged in 2014 and welcomed their son Rafferty in 2015.
Suzanne confirmed their split happened in January, and shared she’s grateful to be handling the breakup while sober. She’s been alcohol-free for six years, which gives her the strength to cope.
I haven’t been online much lately because I’ve been dealing with a breakup, which was really unexpected. I’m still processing everything.
Okay, so things have been really hard lately, and honestly, I didn’t even want to post about it. But then I realized… my whole online presence is about being open about my mental health journey. It’s about sharing my struggles, getting sober, completely changing how I live, and finding things like running that actually make me feel… stable. It’s everything that’s helped me, and I felt like I needed to be real about what’s been going on.
Things have shifted, and I’m facing a new set of challenges. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m grateful I’ve developed the skills to handle it. I’m especially thankful for my six years of sobriety and the dedication I’ve put into growing as a person.
Things haven’t been easy, and it’s been a bit of a struggle, but I’ve been working on myself. I’ve found help through therapy and meditation, and I’ve also started prioritizing exercise and healthy eating.
I’m realizing I need to fully embrace this pain, allow myself to heal, and see it as the start of a profound journey of self-love. I’m entering a phase where I’m prioritizing and nurturing my relationship with myself above all else.
I needed to share this to finish one part of my life and begin a new one.
It’s been hard to find the words since January, but now, with March almost here, I’m finally ready to fully focus on healing and start treating myself with the love and care I deserve – something I should have prioritized a long time ago.
Two years before her engagement to Sam, Suzanne was married to Heart FM presenter Jason King, 51.
She married the radio presenter in 2009 until their separation in 2012.
