Superman and Lois season 4 episode 6 recap and ending explained: [SPOILER] is coming
As a long-time fan of Superman and Lois, I must say that this week’s episode was a rollercoaster ride of emotions! From the character development to the plot twists, it had all the right ingredients for a fantastic episode.
The midway point of the final season for “Superman and Lois” has arrived. This popular DC television series made its comeback last month to start its fourth season following a break of over a year. Instead of easing into things, it decided to continue right from where it ended earlier – something that the show hadn’t done before.
The situation has grown tense and the risks have escalated, as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and their family find themselves targeted by Lex Luthor’s vengeance. Not only are they affected, but Luthor is also causing trouble for Smallville residents, aiming to frighten and intimidate them even more.
In the sixth installment of the season, we get a glimpse of how profoundly he’s influencing the small town of Smallville. The antagonist tries to acquire land for his personal interest, but the townspeople, unsurprisingly, push back fiercely against this move. They are adamantly opposed to his plans.
First things first, I must warn you that the following discussion contains significant plot reveals from episode 6 of Superman and Lois season 4. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, perhaps it’s best to stop reading now.
The Heart of Smallville
Lex Luthor’s efforts to purchase land in Smallville are driven by his ambition to establish Luthorcorp’s latest headquarters in that town. His associates find this idea laughable, especially Milton, but the mockery is trivial compared to the opposition he faces from the citizens of Smallville, particularly Mayor Lana Lang who stands firm against him even when threatened.
Lana and Clark collaborate to persuade Aidy Manning (the resident initially intending to sell her property to Luthor) to cancel the deal, and they succeed. Remarkably, their strategy works because Aidy – the woman who witnessed Lois and the boys mourning Superman’s death – suggests that she changed her mind due to Clark and his actions for Smallville and the world. Clark is surprised at the notion that someone in town might be aware of him being Superman, but she isn’t the only one with this knowledge.
At the bar, Lex, visibly upset, challenges Lana and Aidy. He proposes $10 million apiece to Aidy and those present if they accept his offer. However, the money fails to win their loyalty, as they all decline. Enraged, Lex threatens to lose control, but Clark intervenes and stands by him, causing Lex to retreat and leave in a fit of anger. Amanda witnesses this unfolding scene, reminding her of Lois’ earlier comments about Lex keeping her out of the loop and potentially losing his grip. She questions her faith in him, admitting she’s unsure if she still trusts him.
In the process, Lana finds herself in a dangerous situation when Otis breaks into her home and tries to explode it with gas. However, the smell alerted Lana and she encountered him in the kitchen. A struggle followed, one that nearly led to Otis strangling Lana. Thankfully, Sarah intervened with a baseball bat, knocking out Otis unconscious.
Clark is furious and confronts Lex in the town square on a very rainy, deserted, quiet night. Luthor responds by turning all of the lights in town red – using the same red energy of the Red Sun, stripping Superman of his powers. But Clark doesn’t need powers to confront Lex, as the two have a very physical brawl in town. Luthor almost wins but Clark breaks free (along with potentially breaking Lex’s arm) and pummels him into a bloody mess as his family watches. He stops just shy of killing Lex, but the fact of the matter remains that Luthor had underestimated how powerful and angry that Clark Kent was; not Superman.
Beyond Smallville
In this episode of ‘Superman and Lois’, there was a strong emphasis on human emotions within the main storyline, which isn’t unexpected given the show’s knack for such narratives. Moreover, the side stories were deeply rooted in character development as well. Lois observed Clark developing some grey hairs, causing him to ponder if he ages at the same pace as humans. Despite finding this aspect daunting, he finds solace in the fact that he gets to grow old with Lois. However, it’s intriguing to witness his struggle to reconcile this with the possibility that everyone in town may gradually discover his true identity as Superman.
It turns out, Coach Gaines also found out about their secret through word of mouth. His proposal is to persuade Jonathan and Jordan to re-join the football team at Smallville High. Jordan reminds him it’s been more than a year since he played, and Jonathan recalls that he was kicked off due to his involvement in the X-Kryptonite incident. However, Coach Gaines remains unfazed and proposes finding creative solutions to bring these super siblings back to his team again.
In Jonathan’s earshot, someone is asking for aid, providing him an opportunity to depart from Vicky Mays café, as the coach carries on explaining his concept to Jordan. However, Jordan has other preoccupations and, upon Clark and Lois’s suggestion, inquires of Sarah if he could secure employment at Vicky Mays. She refuses and feels envious of his capacity to restart his life elsewhere (due to his powers), but he queries her why she can’t do the same. Intrigued by this, she contemplates studying abroad. Initially, she reconsidered after Lana was attacked because she didn’t wish to leave her mother. Yet, despite initial reluctance, Lana found the idea appealing – especially since it guaranteed her safety from Luthor.
Following discussions with his parents and Jordan, Jonathan eventually acknowledges that he’s overextending himself, especially after Lana was assaulted while he was asleep. Similarly, Jordan recognizes the need for them to resume their roles as superheroes due to Jonathan’s excessive commitments and their inability to respond promptly during the attack. Both Superboys understand that the world requires their presence. Before diving back into heroics, they decide to accompany Sarah on visits to prospective schools in Greece.
The infamous Warsuit suit is coming
In the last scene of “When The Lights Come On,” it’s as if a lightbulb goes off over Amanda’s head, symbolizing her epiphany. Not the classic red lightbulbs from Smallville, but rather, her idea that she shares with Lex. Yes, she’s returned, and she subtly reminds him of his earlier advice: to make a choice, and in this moment, she is choosing him. Despite offering to mend his physical wounds, she delivers some hard truths: he’s on the wrong path, and it’s not just about the stitches.
Amanda informs Lex that it’s time for him to acquire a fresh suit, and it may spark a recognition if you’re versed in DC Comics lore. Indeed, this hints at the appearance of Lex Luthor’s iconic battlesuit on “Superman and Lois”. Equipped to counteract Superman’s strength and armed with sophisticated Kryptonite technology, this suit enables Lex to engage in combat with the Man of Steel. Considering he couldn’t best Clark Kent without powers, Lex will undoubtedly require every ounce of additional aid to overcome Superman.
The scene is now prepared for what could be the final confrontation. Although Luthor has temporarily withdrawn to Metropolis, we are certain he will return. His motive will be revenge, and with his Warsuit by his side, it’s clear he intends to follow through on that plan. Despite being overpowered by the Steel Family, you can expect him to fight fiercely until the very end.
Superman and Lois season 4 airs new episodes on The CW every Monday night at 8/7c.
