Princess Daisy first appeared in the 1989 Game Boy game, Super Mario Land. In the game, she’s the princess of Sarasaland, a distant continent. When an alien named Tatanga kidnaps her, Mario and Luigi must journey through the four kingdoms of Sarasaland to defeat Tatanga and rescue her.

Mario and Luigi’s adventure to rescue Daisy in Sarasaland laid the groundwork for the game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. While they were busy in Sarasaland, Wario seized the opportunity to take control of the Mushroom Kingdom and become Mario’s new primary enemy.

Princess Daisy wasn’t included in the follow-up game, and she didn’t have a major role in story-driven Super Mario games for quite some time.
