Princess Daisy’s unexpected appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might be a key part of the next film’s story. While a third Super Mario movie isn’t officially happening yet, the first film’s success suggests it’s a strong possibility.
Similar to how the first movie introduced Yoshi, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie used a scene after the credits to hint at characters who might appear in a future film. Princess Daisy, a popular character who hasn’t yet been included in the movies, made a brief appearance in the Gateway Galaxy.
This brief hint could simply mean Princess Daisy will join Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Toad on their adventure. However, it might also be an important setup for a future movie. This is plausible, as her first appearance in a video game formed the basis of a beloved Mario and Luigi story.
Princess Daisy’s Role In Super Mario Land Explained
Princess Daisy first appeared in the 1989 Game Boy game, Super Mario Land. In the game, she’s the princess of Sarasaland, a distant continent. When an alien named Tatanga kidnaps her, Mario and Luigi must journey through the four kingdoms of Sarasaland to defeat Tatanga and rescue her.
Mario and Luigi’s adventure to rescue Daisy in Sarasaland laid the groundwork for the game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. While they were busy in Sarasaland, Wario seized the opportunity to take control of the Mushroom Kingdom and become Mario’s new primary enemy.
Princess Daisy wasn’t included in the follow-up game, and she didn’t have a major role in story-driven Super Mario games for quite some time. She mostly appeared as a playable character in spin-off series like Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. Because of this, her biggest impact on the Mario universe remains her appearance in the original Super Mario Land.
Princess Daisy’s Introduction Could Set Up A Super Mario Land Movie
Because Princess Daisy first appeared in the game Super Mario Land, her inclusion in the new movie could hint at a story inspired by that classic game. Super Mario Land is a popular and likely candidate for the plot of a future sequel.
Given how the upcoming 2026 Super Mario movie appears to be taking inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, it probably won’t be a direct adaptation of just one game. It’s more likely the film will blend stories from several different Mario games, and Super Mario Land could be one of them.
One idea is that Princess Daisy’s role in the ‘Gateway Galaxy’ could be key. Given that The Super Mario Bros. Movie and a potential Super Mario Galaxy Movie moved away from the ‘damsel in distress’ storyline for Peach, a Super Mario Land film could do the same for Daisy. Instead of needing to be rescued, she might be actively requesting assistance.
Princess Daisy might travel to the Mushroom Kingdom to ask Peach for help, though they aren’t necessarily close friends. This seems likely, as the movie hinted at a connection when Luigi mentioned wanting Peach to have “a friend.”
This could lead to an adventure in Sarasaland, a location the Super Mario series hasn’t visited since 1989. The villain could be Tatanga, who starts the whole thing, and Wario might finally appear after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Just like in the video games, he could see Mario and friends are gone and take the opportunity to cause trouble.
