Studio Ghibli’s most heartbreaking movie is finally coming to Netflix
As a seasoned gamer and anime enthusiast who has weathered countless epic battles and emotional rollercoasters, I can confidently say that the news of Studio Ghibli’s “Grave of the Fireflies” gracing Netflix on September 16 is nothing short of a game-changer. Having grown up in a post-war era myself, the story’s raw authenticity and poignant depiction of resilience amidst adversity resonate deeply with me.
Studio Ghibli’s most heartbreaking movie is finally coming to Netflix.
The classic anime film “Grave of the Fireflies,” initially released in 1988, is scheduled to be available for streaming on September 16th. This title adds to the growing collection of Studio Ghibli movies already accessible on the platform.
The animated movie is a depiction of the lives of orphaned siblings, Seita and Setsuko, who struggle to survive amidst the wreckage following World War II in Japan. This film is based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s 1967 short story and directed by Isao Takahata.
The actors featured are Ayano Shiraishi playing Setsuko, Tsutomu Tatsumi portraying Seita, Yoshiko Shinohara in the role of Mrs. Yokokawa, and Akemi Yamaguchi taking on the character of Aunt.
As announced by Netflix, the moving animated film “Grave of the Fireflies” can now be streamed in more than 190 countries, including the United Kingdom. This is part of their continuous efforts to broaden their selection of exceptional Japanese anime on the platform.
The movie was widely praised by critics when it premiered, boasting a perfect 100% score based on 45 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The general agreement about the site is that the movie, “Grave of the Fireflies“, is a deeply moving anti-war film from Studio Ghibli, renowned for its exceptional beauty and lingering haunting quality.
Last year, Studio Ghibli’s newest movie, titled “The Boy and the Heron“, was met with widespread praise following its premiere, earning a remarkable 97% approval rating on a popular review platform.
Under the guidance of director Hayao Miyazaki, the story unfolds about a young boy embarking on a journey through a mystical underworld beneath the earth’s surface, with the aim of rescuing his loved ones.
Last year, Toshio Suzuki, a longtime collaborator of Miyazaki, revealed that the filmmaker has started working on a new project.
Suzuki stated in an interview with Libération that he’s always preoccupied with what comes next for him, and at this point, it seems impossible to hinder him as I’ve already resigned myself to the situation.
Grave of the Fireflies will arrive on Netflix on September 16.
