HBO Max recently launched a new show continuing the story of The Big Bang Theory. However, this sequel is quite different in tone and subject matter from the original series—and creating it presented unique challenges for the production team.
There Was No Studio Audience for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe
According to creator Chuck Lorre, filming The Big Bang Theory felt more like live theater than traditional television. Because it was filmed with multiple cameras in front of a live studio audience each night, the laughter you hear on the show is genuine. He compared making the recent short film, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, to creating a movie.
Prady admitted they didn’t fully understand the scope of the project at the beginning. While they had a general sense of it, each day brought something surprising. He especially praised the behind-the-scenes crew, calling them incredible and expressing gratitude for their hard work.

The Spinoff Is Much More Sci-Fi Than The Big Bang Theory
“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is best described as a science fiction comedy, rather than a traditional sitcom. The story begins when Stuart accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard from “The Big Bang Theory,” which unexpectedly opens pathways to alternate universes. Along with new characters Bert Kibbler, Denise, and Barry Kripke, Stuart travels through these different realities, meeting various versions of himself and his friends as he tries to stop a catastrophic event threatening all universes.
I’m really hoping we’ll see some familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory in the new spin-off! There’s been a lot of talk about characters like Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, and the others potentially appearing, but so far nothing’s been officially confirmed. It’s possible they’re keeping any cameos under wraps, so we’ll just have to tune in on streaming to find out for sure.
