The Strait of Hormuz has, darlings, been unlatched for all commercial vessels as of April 17, courtesy of the much-hyped Abbas Araghchi. This little announcement prances in on the back of a decently dramatic 10-day Israel-Lebanon ceasefire that takes effect today.
The opening, however, comes with conditions fit for a duchess’s diary: vessels must saunter along routes choreographed by Iranโs Ports and Maritime Organisation. Access lasts only for the remnant of the truce before the curtain falls again on commerce and propriety.
Prices Primp and Prance: Oil Takes a Gentle Bow
The telegram of news sent energy markets into a flutter-the kind of flutter that makes even your savings blush. Brent crude slid 6.84%, slipping from $99.39 on April 16 to around $92; US crude shed 7.04% in a similar dash for the exit.
In line with the Lebanon lull, the passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz, darling, handles roughly 20% of the worldโs daily oil and LNG shipments. Iran had effectively shut the door during the broader quarrel, nudging Brent above $100 earlier this month-how very theatrical.
Markets had already been pricing in a possible resolution. Oil dipped below $95 on April 14 after the White House signaled progress in US-Iran negotiations.
Trump Claims Credit, Bitcoin Gains
President Donald Trump chirped on Truth Social that โthe Strait of Iran is fully open and ready for full passage.โ He, for emphasis, used โStrait of Iranโ instead of the correct sobriquet because why not be impertinent?

IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE. THANK YOU!
– Commentary Donald J. Trump Posts From Truth Social (@TrumpDailyPosts) April 17, 2026
Trumpโs framing suggested boundless access, though Iranโs terms politely restrict the opening to the ceasefire period and the lanes that have been orderly rehearsed.
Beyond oil, other markets responded with a brisk nod. Bitcoin (BTC) gained 1.59%, while the S&P 500 edged up 0.07%, giving the sense of a broad risk-on flip in a room that could already use a drink.
The relief, alas, may be as fleeting as a song at last call. The US-Iran ceasefire expires on April 21, and any breach of the Lebanon truce could reverse the open-door. Broader negotiations over Iranโs nuclear program and sanctions remain as unresolved as a mystery plot in a summer stock.
