Storm, Transformers, and the best comic books of the week
As a comic book enthusiast of many years, I must say that this week’s releases have been nothing short of exhilarating! From the gritty streets of Hell’s Kitchen to the distant reaches of Cybertron, each title offers a unique blend of action, drama, and intrigue.
Typically, we highlight the top 5 comic books from each week. However, there are weeks when an abundance of fantastic titles and releases make it challenging to limit the selection to just 5 issues. This is one of those exceptional weeks where we’re faced with a wealth of great choices.
Every comic in this collection either hints at a fresh development for a character, illustrates their personal growth, presents an astonishing event, or depicts a pivotal moment that alters the entire course of its universe’s storyline. It’s quite an exciting way to round off the final month of new comic releases, and there are still two more weeks of fresh comics to look forward to.
So, let’s get right into it with the pick of the week and it’s not from Marvel or DC.
FML (pick of the week)
- Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
- Artist: David López
It’s challenging to discuss what makes this specific plot point appealing without revealing too much about the storyline, so I’ll shift the focus towards one of the primary characters – Patty, a mother of two, who finds herself living in a world plagued by chaos. Despite being overwhelmed beyond most people’s limits, she manages to keep going and even thrives better than many would under such circumstances. However, amidst all her struggles, another heartbreaking incident occurs that leaves her reeling, marking yet another instance where she experiences shock.
Shock is something that many people understand and Kelly Sue DeConnick explains it in a way that is relatable. That isn’t surprising considering who the writer is. I recommend everyone jump at the opportunity to read this title.
Uncanny X-Men No. 7
- Writer: Gail Simone
- Artist: David Marquez and Victor Olazab
Gail Simone’s Uncanny X-Men narrated the events preceding and coinciding with Cyclops’ squad’s assault on the Greymalkin mutant detention center (for more details, see Jed MacKay’s X-Men Issue 8). Prior to the attack, Cyclops instructed Rogue to withdraw. However, Anna Marie reminded Scott that some of their comrades, Jubilee and Calico, had been taken captive, and she refused to comply. Naturally, this resulted in a confrontation. Fortunately, they all emerged victorious from the skirmish, preserving their honor.
The action was great, but the lead into the rest of the series was the best part. There’s a mysterious door with an X on it that may have Charles Xavier behind it. However, the way it was written made it seem like that was too obvious. If this writer had to guess, Mr. Sinister may be behind the doors and perhaps even be the mysterious shadowed person on the cover of Uncanny X-Men No. 8. We’ll have to wait and see.
Storm No. 3
- Writer: Murewa Ayodele
- Artist: Lucas Werneck
When Bleeding Cool unveiled images hinting at an intimate moment between Storm and Wolverine, it appeared that this would be the main attraction in the issue. Indeed, this part was superbly illustrated by Lucas Werneck and sparked a meaningful dialogue about their relationship. However, there’s much more to the story. A significant subplot involves Storm traveling to Latveria for discussions with Dr. Doom regarding the fate of mutants once he takes control of the world (as depicted in “One World Under Doom”).
Unfortunately, due to an arrangement made by Doctor Voodoo that keeps her alive, Storm can’t utilize her powers for seven consecutive days. Currently, she’s on the final day of this restriction, which means she has only a concealed knife in her attire to protect herself. Remarkably, even against Dr. Doom, one knife is more than enough for Storm.
Batman: Dark Patterns
- Writer: Dan Watters
- Artist: Hayden Sherman
In a fresh take on typical Batman comics, Issue No. 1 of “Batman: Dark Patterns” was exceptional and immediately set itself apart. It was grim, violent, and brimming with chilling imagery that sucked us in to its immersive universe. Moreover, the writing excelled and the artwork perfectly complemented the somber tone.
Besides that intrigue, there’s a chilling enigma surrounding the untimely demise of blameless individuals, resembling characters from a horror movie like Hellraiser. You certainly wouldn’t want to skip a single edition!
Today, we’re excited to announce the arrival of SPACE GHOST Issue 8!

Space Ghost No. 8
- Writer: David Pepose
- Artist: Jonathan Lau
David Pepose has crafted Space Ghost as one of comic’s most formidable characters. In the last few months, this character has undergone quite an adventurous period. At various points, it seems he might have been overcome if not for the assistance of Jan, Jace, and Blip.
Currently, Space Ghost experiences his initial defeat, which is quite unfavorable for him. He lacks any support system and the antagonist, General Metallus, isn’t merely impervious to damage, but also exceptionally intelligent. If Space Ghost manages to emerge victorious from this predicament, it will undeniably be an extraordinary event.
DC vs Vampires: World War V No. 5
- Writer: Matthew Rosenberg
- Artist: Otto Schmidt
In this series, we’ve had our share of fun, but this particular issue took a dark turn, especially since it’s set in a vampire-controlled world. Towards the end of “World War V”, No. 5, a massive secret is unveiled – one so shocking that it might make you despise everything that transpired.
One of the nicest characters in DC Comics was tortured and used by the former king of the vampires, Dick Grayson. It’ll make you question Barbara Gordon and her truce with the humans.
The author deliberately avoids disclosing their own experiences or outcomes, as doing so would ruin the surprise. To learn more, you must pick up and read the comic book.
Ultimate X-Men No. 10
- Writer: Peach Momoko
- Artist: Peach Momoko
Even though Peach Momoko’s “Ultimate X-Men” has been exceptional, I’ve been eagerly anticipating a significant event. That long-awaited climax unfolded in issue number 10, and boy, was it spectacular!
As tensions rise within the Children of the Atom sect, the general population grows increasingly anxious. As we near the end of volume two, I predict that the events will become even more dramatic and significant. This is just the start of an exciting journey!
The Amazing Spider-Man No. 63
- Writer: Justina Ireland
- Artist: Gleb Melnikov
Instead of inflicting physical agony on Spider-Man, the latest Scion (Cyrios) struck a chord with me, Peter Parker, by reminding me of my past shortcomings. However, I’ve faced this tactic from many foes before, which is why I remained relatively unperturbed, as I usually would be.
Cyrios should come to terms with the fact that it’s actually Spider-Man; he grasps the concept of time travel, and despite his regret over past errors, he’s more adept at acknowledging and taking responsibility for them rather than the reverse.
Transformers No. 15
- Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
- Artist: Mike Spicer and Jorge Corona
Among the standout aspects of Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers is the high level of consequence. Characters don’t merely perish; they can experience pain, progress, and transformation. In this particular work, Optimus Prime, Arcee, and Beachcomber are among those who undergo such developments.
Arcee swears to locate Magnus, Beachcomber accompanies her because as a pacifist, he can no longer aid the Autobots in a violent manner, and Optimus is increasingly aggressive (with periods of unconsciousness during these instances). Given that Daniel Warren Johnson is a wrestling enthusiast, there’s a possibility of Optimus undergoing a significant change – although it’s just speculation at this point, it would make for an exciting twist. However, whether or not this occurs remains to be seen.
The aspect that captures my attention is watching how the fellow Autobots from Cybertron are transforming due to the ongoing war. They’ve grown more ferocious and somewhat predatory in their behavior, displaying a ruthlessness that even surpasses the Decepticons. Cliffjumper expresses his concern and shock, but the other Autobots explain to him that the nature of the conflict has altered them deeply.
Are you all set, buddy? Here’s some exciting news: Wolverine #1 hits the shelves today! Don’t miss out! Giada Belvi, Rachelle Cheri, and Cory Petit have joined forces to deliver an outstanding start to Laura Kinney’s new series!

Laura Kinney: Wolverine No. 1
- Writer: Erica Schultz
- Artist: Giada Belviso
In my opinion, the debut issue of “Laura Kinney: Wolverine” surpassed all expectations. It featured Laura rescuing mutants across the globe, with her initial mission leading her to Dubai where she dismantled a gang forcefully holding mutants captive.
This author can’t help but admire the way this series kicks off. Unlike other stories that leave Wolverine’s initial assignment hanging, we are treated to witnessing him resolve matters swiftly and effectively right from the start. It’s a superb opening for what promises to be an outstanding series. And it doesn’t stop there – the issue concludes with an unexpected visitor from Hell’s Kitchen!
