Stephen Amell is acknowledging his role in the decision to cancel a show. Following the success of Suits on Netflix and Peacock in 2023, NBC fast-tracked a spinoff series starring Amell. He discussed the situation in detail on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast.
I take full responsibility for any issues with the show. I recognize there were problems, and it was my job to fix them, to make things look good, and to compensate for those mistakes with a strong performance. Ultimately, I failed to deliver that captivating presence that could have overcome those flaws.”
Amell explained that he struggled to bring his character, federal prosecutor Ted Black, to life in a way that would keep viewers engaged, ultimately contributing to the show’s cancellation. He also shared that the show’s creator had doubts about its success even after finishing the pilot.
Stephen Amell explained that discussions with Ted Black didn’t lead to a viable path forward. After seeing a rough cut of the Suits LA pilot about a month after filming wrapped, he spoke with creator Aaron Korsh, who wasn’t confident it would succeed. Korsh admitted he wasn’t sure if the show would work out.
From what I’m hearing, there was definitely some tension behind the scenes on Suits LA. According to Amell, Korsh, the showrunner, had a clear vision for the series, but it often clashed with what NBC, the network, had in mind. I wasn’t privy to those discussions, so I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it sounds like they weren’t always on the same page about the show’s direction. It wasn’t necessarily a full-blown battle, but a difference in creative priorities, it seems.
Suits LA Wasn’t Without Its Fans
Despite low ratings that led NBC to cancel it after one season, Suits LA developed a dedicated fanbase. These fans tried to rally support and save the show, but their efforts weren’t successful.
Despite a lot of fan support, the ‘Suits LA’ reboot didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped, explained Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal’s head of program planning. He noted there were various reasons for this, but ultimately the show wasn’t showing signs of future growth, leading to the difficult decision to cancel it.
Stephen Amell Will Be Back on Television Soon
Although the Suits LA project didn’t pan out as Stephen Amell hoped, he’s still a successful TV actor, best known for his eight seasons playing the DC superhero Oliver Queen in The CW’s Arrow. He’s currently working on his next project.
Showrunner Matt Nix said Stephen Amell was perfect for the new ‘Baywatch’ series from their very first discussion. Amell brings the heart, intensity, and heroic presence the show needs. Nix added that Amell is a lead actor who can handle both the action and the emotional depth while still keeping things enjoyable, and the team is thrilled to begin working with him.
Suits LA‘s one season is available to stream on Peacock.
