A new Star Wars trilogy is in the works from Simon Kinberg, the writer of X-Men: Days of Future Past and co-creator of Star Wars: Rebels. Reports indicate that the trilogy will be Episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga and will feature a significant return from an actor who appeared in the previous sequel trilogy. While Lucasfilm is considering expanding The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter into new trilogies for theaters, Kinberg’s story will be the next official three-movie arc. Details have been limited since the project was first announced in November 2024.
Star Wars fans, get ready! According to Daniel Richtman, Daisy Ridley is set to return as Rey in the upcoming new trilogy, playing a significant part. However, the new films will primarily focus on a fresh set of characters, with Rey and the original sequel trilogy stars passing the torch to a new generation. Simon Kinberg is writing the trilogy.
So, I’ve been following the news about Rey’s movie – the one Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is supposed to direct – and apparently it’s in a bit of a holding pattern. A source is saying it’s “still alive (for now)”, which basically means it could still happen, but it’s also dangerously close to becoming another Star Wars project Disney shelves. It’s a little nerve-wracking as a fan, honestly!
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Simon Kinberg was chosen to lead the new Star Wars trilogy, suggesting the decision on who would oversee Rey’s story had been made. The publication also indicated that Lucasfilm’s current leaders fully support this new direction.
Last June, news surfaced that the New Jedi Order movie was paused in development, and there hasn’t been much information released about it since. When former Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently left her position, she didn’t mention the film at all, which has led to worries about whether it will ever be made – especially considering it was announced nearly three years ago.
Find out the seven biggest revelations from Kennedy’s Lucasfilm exit interview.
Is Rey Becoming the New Face of Star Wars Movies?

Earlier reports indicated that Lucasfilm had ambitious plans for Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey, positioning her as central to a new series of interconnected stories similar to the Mandalorian universe. The story was expected to start with a large-scale film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and eventually lead to a significant, climactic movie.
These plans might have shifted, and the new movie, potentially Starfighter in 2027, could feature Rey. Many believe this would establish her New Jedi Order as a central part of the galaxy’s future.
Kathleen Kennedy has announced that Simon Kinberg submitted a comprehensive outline for his upcoming Star Wars trilogy last August, and a full script is anticipated to be completed around March.
Star Wars fans are now cautious when Disney announces new movies, because so many projects get cancelled. While there’s optimism with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now in charge, Lucasfilm is definitely prioritizing getting Rey back in a starring role on the big screen quickly.
When Lucasfilm had Ridley announce Rey’s return at Star Wars Celebration 2023, it strongly signaled that Rey will be a central figure in the future of the franchise, potentially linking together various upcoming films and Disney+ series.
Unfortunately, even if this new Star Wars trilogy happens, it likely won’t be released until at least 2028. The upcoming films The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter are expected to occupy the next two years of movie theater schedules in the Star Wars universe.
