Mark Hamill, known for his role in the original Star Wars films, recently shared his thoughts on Dave Filoni’s new leadership position at Lucasfilm.
George Lucas’s production company is famous for creating popular franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Willow, and American Graffiti. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy became president. Recently, Dave Filoni was promoted to president, taking over after Kennedy stepped down.
Mark Hamill has collaborated with Lucas, Kennedy, and Filoni at Lucasfilm over the last five decades, giving him a firsthand view of their leadership styles. In a recent interview with USA Today, Hamill shared his thoughts on the announcement earlier this year that Filoni would be taking over from Kennedy.
Mark Hamill believes Dave Filoni is the best person to lead Lucasfilm, explaining that Filoni was mentored by George Lucas himself and therefore understands Lucas’s creative vision.
“George was a mentor to Dave, so he knows George’s sensibility.”
It’s been 50 years since Mark Hamill started filming the original Star Wars movie. He recently told USA Today that while it doesn’t feel like that long ago, it does make him realize how much time has passed.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years! It really makes you think about how time passes and brought back so many memories… it feels like time flies when you’re enjoying yourself.
Mark Hamill first appeared as Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars film (later known as A New Hope), alongside Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.
The three original actors reprised their iconic roles in the sequel trilogy, beginning with The Force Awakens. This film introduced a new group of characters who interacted with Luke, Han, and Leia.
Mark Hamill returned to his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
Dave Filoni first became involved with Star Wars in 2008, directing the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He then continued with the project as a supervising director on the Clone Wars television series.
I’m a huge fan of Dave Filoni! He didn’t just work on The Mandalorian – he actually brought so much more Star Wars to life! He co-created and helped run Star Wars Rebels, and then went on to create other awesome animated series like Star Wars Resistance and The Bad Batch. And now, his newest show, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, just dropped on Disney+ and everyone loves it so much they’ve already greenlit a second season! It’s amazing to see him consistently deliver such great content.
Dave Filoni transitioned to directing live-action shows, serving as an executive producer on The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka (which he also developed). He’s also producing Skeleton Crew and the upcoming theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu, scheduled for May 22, 2026.
In addition to directing and producing, 2020 was a pivotal year for Dave Filoni at Lucasfilm, as he was promoted to executive creative director. He later became chief creative officer (CCO) in 2023.
Okay, so Mark Hamill might be done with Star Wars, which is a little sad, but honestly, the franchise is just exploding with new stuff! We’ve got the Maul series coming up, and a movie starring The Mandalorian and Grogu, which I’m super excited about. But that’s not all – Lucasfilm is also working on a movie called Star Wars: Starfighter – mark your calendars for May 28, 2027! – plus season two of Ahsoka, and a whole bunch of other projects for both theaters and streaming. It’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan!
