The sets used for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are being dismantled, which makes the chances of creating the planned spin-off, Star Trek: Year One, even slimmer. Strange New Worlds, which premiered in 2022 and follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, successfully brought new life to the Star Trek franchise. Both critics and fans generally enjoyed the show, and it performed well on Paramount+.
Even though Strange New Worlds has been popular, it will conclude after a shorter fifth season which has already been filmed. When Paul Wesley joined the cast as James T. Kirk, many fans hoped the show might continue by focusing on Kirk’s early days as captain of the Enterprise. A continuation, potentially titled Star Trek: Year One, seemed like a logical next step given the show’s talented actors, but Paramount has decided to go in a different direction.
With No Strange New Worlds Sets, Year One Seems Unlikely
Recent reports indicate that both Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds are coming to an end. While both shows have future seasons planned, filming has already finished. Starfleet Academy will conclude after its second season, and Strange New Worlds will finish with its fourth season, followed by a shorter fifth season.
Since the sets used for Star Trek: Year One could have also been used for Strange New Worlds, the fact that they were destroyed doesn’t look good for the potential spin-off series. While nothing is official yet, it’s strange to dismantle the sets if they were considering continuing Captain Kirk’s adventures aboard the Enterprise.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has brought back familiar characters with fresh takes, such as Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Scotty (Martin Quinn), both of whom could have starred in their own series. The recent announcement of a guest appearance in the Season 5 finale initially suggested a possible spin-off focused on ‘Year One,’ but that now appears unlikely.
What’s Next For Star Trek On Paramount+?
As a lifelong Trek fan, it’s a little heartbreaking to see things winding down. With Strange New Worlds and the recently announced Starfleet Academy being the only two shows left, and both of those now canceled, the future of Trek on TV is really up in the air. It feels like the franchise might be heading back to the movies, which could be cool, but it definitely seems like we’re closing the chapter on Trek as a streaming staple. It’s the end of an era, honestly.
Though often discussed now, Star Trek: Year One wasn’t the first potential spin-off after a successful Star Trek series. Following the well-received third season of Star Trek: Picard in 2023, many fans hoped for a Star Trek: Legacy series. The show would have featured a new captain taking command of the Enterprise-G, and demand was strong. However, despite ongoing fan interest and support from cast members, Star Trek: Legacy appears to have been cancelled.
The future of Star Trek is uncertain, and the planned Star Trek: Year One series seems increasingly unlikely. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has created fantastic characters, both new and reimagined, and it would be disappointing if Season 5 is their last appearance. Luckily, the Star Trek universe is vast enough to accommodate many different stories, so hopefully, more adventures are on the way for this beloved franchise.
