On Monday, Star Trek icon George Takei turned 89 and celebrated with his husband, Brad Altman Takei, at Kali Restaurant in Hollywood. The couple has been married for 17 years.
The Grammy-nominated singer, who had been using a cane recently, was in a wheelchair and being pushed by a 72-year-old retired financial journalist. He’d had foot surgery not long ago.
As a lifestyle expert, I always love hearing how couples meet! The Takeis have a particularly sweet story – they first connected in the early 80s through the LA Frontrunners, a local running club. They quickly realized they had a lot in common, especially a shared love for running marathons, and the rest, as they say, is history!
The actor, known for his role in ‘Beam Me Up, Sulu,’ told The Guardian in February that he’s learned his lesson after running a marathon and doesn’t plan on doing another one anytime soon.
I took up marathon running in my forties. My husband, Brad, was my coach, and I’ve completed six marathons overall. My most recent was the London Marathon in 1991.
Takei says he’s doing very well and believes that prioritizing your health leads to a good life.
The bestselling author said she loves relaxing with naps and a slow-paced dinner.
George Takei, who has a large following of 16.5 million on social media, recently asked his fans to donate to PFLAG in lieu of birthday gifts. He explained the organization has helped many people in the LGBTQ+ community, including himself.
Actor George Takei, best known for his role in Star Trek: Khan, publicly came out as gay in 2005 at the age of 68. He and his partner made history as the first same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license in West Hollywood, and they later married in 2008 at the Japanese American National Museum.
On April 10th, the close companions journeyed to San Francisco, where the Asian Law Caucus celebrated the courageous Japanese-American pioneer with an award for his activism at their 54th annual gala.
George Takei will next appear with his former Star Trek colleague Walter Koenig at Fan Fusion, a pop culture convention in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 6th and 7th. Tickets for the event range from $44 to $1,999.
The Democratic politician recently created a special, interactive video using artificial intelligence. It’s based on extensive interviews and will be the main attraction of a new exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, set to open later this year.
George Takei is also an executive producer on the upcoming movie adaptation of Jamie Ford’s 2009 novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. The film is currently in development.
George Takei is most famous for playing Captain Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series, which ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969. He also reprised the role in six Star Trek movies and a 1996 episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
I’ve always been deeply moved by George Takei’s story. Before he became the beloved actor we all know, his family, along with 125,000 other Japanese Americans, faced a terrible injustice. During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, the US government wrongly forced them into internment camps. It’s a part of history that shaped him, and something I think everyone should know about.
The celebrated actor later played a key role in creating and starring in the Broadway musical Allegiance. He portrayed Sam Kimura/Ojii-chan in the show, which told the story of Japanese American internment camps and ran at the Longacre Theatre in Manhattan from 2015 to 2016.
George Takei has shared his experiences through two books: the graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy, published in 2019, and the children’s book My Lost Freedom: A Japanese American World War II Story, released in 2024.
