Star Trek lacks one story arc from it’s compendium of stories

As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I’ve seen my fair share of interstellar adventures, friendships forged across galaxies, and even the occasional alien romance. However, when it comes to epic love stories, Star Trek has been as elusive as a Romulan cloaked ship in the Neutral Zone.

Star Trek boasts numerous compelling narratives, encompassing a wide range of emotional experiences. From episodes dealing with fear, sorrow, anguish, post-traumatic stress, and beyond, Star Trek has left its mark for over half a century. It features intense rivalries such as the one between Khan Noonien Singh and Captain Kirk, heartwarming friendships like those of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander Will Riker, and even exceptional mentor-protégé relationships, exemplified by Captain Kathryne Janeway and Seven of Nine.

They haven’t experienced an all-encompassing love story as of yet; even though we’ve seen some wonderful romances between characters like Cassidy and Benjamin Sisko, Tom Paris and B’Elanna, and Riker and Deanna Troi, a truly grand love saga remains unexplored.

We’ve encountered quite a few challenging characters. Characters such as Kes and Neelix instantly come to mind. Of course, there’s The Doctor, Julian Bashir, and Harry Kim who often struggle to hit the mark. And let’s not forget about Beverly Crusher’s peculiar relationship with that spirit.

Just nothing epic. But we only had one once.

On Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, many fans believe the most compelling romance unfolded, yet it never fully transformed into a traditional one. Instead, it revolved around unrequited love between Odo and Kira Nerys. For years, Odo harbored feelings for Kira, often working alongside her whenever possible. At one point, he even disclosed his emotions to her.

After finding agreement, it seems as if just as soon as they achieved it, Odo departed back to the Great Link in the Gamma Quadrant. Consequently, our long-awaited moment was abruptly snatched away.

Star Trek has delved into romance on numerous occasions, although it’s not typically the main focus of the series. However, more often than you might think, Star Trek has explored romantic love. Regrettably, these instances often fail to meet expectations. The relationships are either underdeveloped and insignificant or the characters remain apart for too long, making the romance unconvincing.

If Miles O’Brien’s most fulfilling relationship spans from beginning to end is a ‘B’ level one with Keiko, or it falls into the ‘C-tier’ category, it suggests that Star Trek could improve its portrayal of this romantic theme.
