Star Trek Enters A Dark Age: Paramount+ Cancellations Leave Fans In The Cold

The future of Star Trek is uncertain following Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount. Currently, only two Star Trek shows are still being made for Paramount+: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. There are a total of 26 episodes from these three seasons that haven’t been released yet.

Star Trek has experienced a major revival over the past decade thanks to Paramount+. The series returned in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, the first new show in over a decade. Discovery successfully launched Star Trek into the world of streaming and played a key role in the growth of CBS All-Access, which eventually became Paramount+.

While some Star Trek fans had problems with Discovery, the show proved popular and kicked off a new wave of Star Trek on streaming services. Since then, the franchise has grown significantly, with five new series – Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – plus a streaming movie, Star Trek: Section 31. This is the biggest expansion of the Star Trek universe since the 1990s.

2022 was a fantastic year for Star Trek on Paramount+, with a new episode arriving almost every week. 2023 brought strong seasons of both Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, earning high praise from critics. However, fans were disappointed when Paramount+ recently canceled several Star Trek series, leading to concerns about the future of the franchise.

Star Trek Is Entering A Familiar Dark Age

It’s been almost ten years since there haven’t been any new Star Trek shows being made or planned for Paramount+. While filming has already finished on the final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, these will be the last Star Trek projects produced by Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideout, for the streaming service.

As Skydance Media took over Paramount Global, Paramount+ started canceling several of its Star Trek shows to cut costs. Star Trek: Prodigy was the first to be canceled in 2023. Then, in 2024, both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks ended after five seasons. Now, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have also been canceled, but their final seasons won’t be released until 2027.

If Paramount Skydance doesn’t announce a new Star Trek TV show soon, it will be the first time since 2005 – when Star Trek: Enterprise finished its run – that there won’t be a Star Trek series on television. Enterprise was the last Star Trek show overseen by Rick Berman, and it took twelve years for Star Trek to return to TV with Discovery.

As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I’ve seen some rough patches, and honestly, it’s disheartening to feel like we’re heading into another one. The move to Paramount+ has been tricky for a lot of us – the seasons feel shorter, and it just doesn’t feel like the Star Trek I grew up with from the 90s, you know, the Rick Berman era. But now, it sounds like things are going to get even more uncertain after 2027, and the wait for what comes next feels… daunting.

After 2027, How Long Will It Be Until Star Trek Returns?

Just a few years ago, Star Trek was incredibly popular, but things have changed dramatically with the recent shifts at Paramount. Skydance has purchased the studio and is now attempting to buy Warner Brothers Discovery. It’s unclear how Star Trek will fit into this new, larger company, and fans should prepare for a period of uncertainty as its future is determined.

The most optimistic outlook for getting new Star Trek shows quickly involves Paramount Skydance making important creative choices and sharing them around 2026. They might announce these plans at big events like San Diego Comic-Con in July or New York Comic-Con in October. While promoting seasons 4 and 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Paramount+ could also reveal what’s next for the Star Trek franchise.

Developing a new Star Trek TV series currently takes around two years, from initial planning to release. Even if a new show were announced next year in 2026, it wouldn’t likely premiere on Paramount+ until 2028. Considering Paramount and Skydance are also figuring out the future of the franchise and handling other business priorities, the wait will probably be even longer.

Recent statements from Alex Kurtzman explain that Paramount Skydance is proceeding cautiously because of the ongoing merger with Warner Brothers Discovery. Combined with Robert Picardo’s acknowledgement that there won’t be new Star Trek content for some time before a potential revival, it appears the franchise is entering a period of inactivity, similar to the way Khan Noonien Singh was put into suspended animation.

Fans are wondering when Star Trek will return, but it’s unlikely to disappear for another long period like it did before. Studios are now fiercely protective of their major franchises – think Marvel and Star Wars – and Star Trek is definitely one of Paramount’s most important and consistently successful properties. After 60 years, it’s sure to be back, and hopefully we’ll see a new installment before the end of the 2020s.
