I’m really getting into Scarpetta on Prime Video! It’s starring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, and it’s actually jumped up to number two on the UK streaming chart. It’s based on those Patricia Cornwell books, and they dropped all eight episodes last week, so I’ve been binging it!
In Scarpetta, Nicole Kidman plays Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the dedicated Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia. She’s relentlessly pursuing a serial killer while simultaneously fighting to defend her reputation and a pivotal case from her past.
The new series follows Scarpetta as she seeks justice while dealing with difficult personal relationships, especially with her sister Dorothy. She’ll also have to overcome old resentments and confront secrets that could destroy her life and career.

The cast features Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bobby Cannavale (from Nine Perfect Strangers) as Detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Ariana DeBose as Lucy Farinelli-Watson, Kay’s niece.
I recently read a review on Digital Spy, and it gave Scarpetta three stars. The reviewer, David Opie, pointed out that the show isn’t meant to be nuanced – and that’s actually part of what makes it enjoyable! He especially liked the tension between the siblings, and said there were some surprisingly creepy horror moments. Those bits really helped keep things interesting, even when the actual case being investigated felt a little slow.
What to Read Next
I’ve been checking out what people are saying about Scarpetta season one, and it’s getting a 69% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics think the plot gets a little too complicated, but a lot of them are really loving the performances from the two main actresses – they’re definitely a highlight!
Digital Mafia Talkies praised Scarpetta, noting that it’s refreshing to find a thriller that truly delivers excitement and that they thoroughly enjoyed it.

According to The Times, the show is consistently engaging, despite becoming a bit chaotic towards the end. The reviewer particularly praised the lead actor’s energetic and captivating performance, noting that the series is ‘rarely dull’ when he’s on screen.
The Globe and Mail also commented on the show, noting that sibling rivalry is reliably entertaining and praising Nicole Kidman’s stylish look with glasses and vests. They concluded that it generally delivers a sense of quality and sophistication.
Scarpetta is streaming now on Prime Video.
