Mme. Lagarde of the European Central Bank, with a conviction only a purveyor of the Euro could muster, has gone on record to unveil a timetable for the digital Euro’s grand debut. Alas, do lesser countries pause in anticipation or proceed with another venture?

It seems, dear reader, there exists a conclave of no less than ten nations who have abandoned their CBDC pursuits in the tempting presence of stablecoin allure. Japan, Denmark, Finland, Singapore, South Korea, and the U.S., with their CBDC dreams deferred, pointed accusatory fingers to the prohibitive costs and the elusive alchemy of convincing the plebs to partake.

And most recently, the Bank of England, in what one can only imagine to be a clarion call, considers scraping their blueprints for a digital pound, as the pendulum of preference swings yet again. The banks, thus implored, are encouraged to innovate with tokenized deposits, perhaps even as thrilling as Jonathan’s beanstalk adventure, though with considerably lower risk.

One cannot help but chuckle at the irony: CBDCs, the stalwart of statecraft, beset upon by the diminutive yet dynamic stablecoins, a reversĂŁo of roles in our modern lilliputian financial tale.
